I’ve done searches and tried different things and nothing has worked so far, so I’m posting this.
I’m running XP Pro on an IMB Thinkpad, Used Add/Remove Programs to uninstall Symantec AV along with the Livereg and one other symantec program. I’m running Comodo Firewall with Defense + and have Ad-Aware and CCleaner installed, but I don’t think either are running on startup. I connect through an aircard using AT&T Connection Manager. Running Firefox as my web browser. I have about 2 seconds of normal download speeds, then virtually nothing. When I stop the OnAccess scanner, normal download speeds resume. In my browser, I did change Firefox to “web browser” status and avast.setup, ashWebSV.exe, ashServ.exe to “Trusted Application” in the Firewall. In Defense + I changed avast.setup and ashAvast.exe to “Trusted Application”. I’m not sure if I missed something in the firewall or with Symantec or AT&T or if its something else. I appreciate any help I can get.
Install avast! (or repair the installation) and boot.
The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton 2008/2007/2006/2005/2004/2003 products and Norton 360 from your computer.
Into the firewall settings, the following programs should be allowed to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable). This is a temporary file that just appears when an update (check) is about to launch, and disappears again afterwards.
Don’t need rights to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service). Although, ashServ.exe sends ping packets to find out if the Internet connection is alive. You can turn this off by checking the “My computer is permanently connected to the Internet” box in the avast Program Settings > Update (Connections) page.
okay, I did this and I am still having the problem. It seemed to work for awhile, but I just booted and have very very slow internet access if any when Avast OnAccess is running.
A bit of a long shot, but last time (6months+) I tried AdAware, even the free version runs a service at start.
Have a look in services and locate the AAW service, if it’s running, try stopping it, see if that makes any difference.
