Another Blue Ball Problem

I like others am having blue ball problems. They are just not there. I am using Vista 32 bit o/s sp 2
I have never used any other anti virus on this computer just Avast which has always been excellent but now I can get no blue ball in task bar I have downloaded and installed a fresh copy having first uninstalled the original copy I have registered it and inserted the licence key which was accepted all to no avail. My security windows panel does not show any anti virus programme installed. I am using Online Armor Firewall. Can you assist please the Avast version is the HOME version

I believe online armor has a startup checking function, does it not ?
If so ensure it isn’t blocking ashDisp.exe, the avast tray icon.

As a temporary measure until this is resolved you can create a desktop shortcut for this file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDisp.exe (the avast icon and interface to the providers). Right click on the file and select Send To, Desktop (create shortcut). You will need to run this after each boot until the problem is resolved.

Thanks David, the Online Armor was not hiding the blue icons and as you suggested for now I created a desktop shortcut Icon. I will hope for a solution soon,

OK, next:
What other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor (StartUpGuard or OnGuard), PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc. ?

Check the option in the Appearance tab of Program Settings. Or Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder. I wouldn’t try this as a first option (but a final one) as you won’t be able to find the true cause of the problem.

Ok Other security progs. Win Patrol, SAS, A Squared, C Cleaner,Malware Bytes Windows Defender. I can’t find anymore

Check out both Win Patrol and Windows Defender, as I believe they both have functions to block new startup items.

Win Patrol, open it and check the Startup Programs tab, see if there is an entry for ashDisp.exe, if not, you may have disabled it not knowing what ashDisp.exe was for. If there is no entry for ashDisp.exe you can click the Add button and navigate to the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDisp.exe file.

I have never used windows defender so you would have to check and see if it has a similar function (I believe it has) and run the same checks as above.

Hi Allen H.

You can always uninstall and then clean re-install your avast. Often solves a ball problem. I have noticed them to occur with out of date avast programs or disrupted download / installs. And I think there have been program update(s) as well as IAVS lately. Can not be sure of exact detail as I am often on different computers.

If you clean re-install use the avast uninstall utility (aswclear on Alwil site) and install fresh up to date download of avast Home. You can either save a copy of license key for reuse on new install, or retrieve key as a lost key at Alwil site (becomes resent to your email address) and use it likewise.

If problem persists, you have issue to reply post to forum.

DavidR,

FYI, Online Armor automatically trusts avast!. Avast! is in it’s whitelist.

I use OA, I’ve never had a problem with avast! in OA.

CCleaner has this feature, hasn’t it? (Tools menu)

Yes it does, but it isn’t an active form of protection, it allows for an existing startup item to be disabled, deleted or enabled.

Hi David, I have checked Win Patrol and Ash Disp is in the startup list and not disabled
Mkis I have already uninstalled and re installed on two seperate occassions but the problem persists

Don’t you have the ‘a’ blue icon on system tray?

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).

Hey Guys. You will never believe this, but I went to the control panel to repair Avast and then decided before doing that I should reboot as the icons were in the tray after I used the shortcut as suggested by DavidR. On reboot as if by magic the blue balls appeared. . I have made NO alterations to my system or Avast Programme So the cause of the problem cannot be established and a solution has not been found that may help others in the future
Thanks to all for the help

Glad you’ve solved anyway.

Thanks Tech

No problem, glad I could help.

A belated welcome to the forums.

ah wonderful to hear good news Allen H.
Hope all runs well from here on as avast icons (re)instate their place in the tray.

mkis, thanks, booted up again today and the icons re still in place
