I was busy for about 30 minutes or more looking at some info on a couple of floppies when I got a pop up box from avast about a “connection timeout”…do you want to continue? (MailWasher.exe-> 204.127.202.10) I clicked yes because I was busy reading and shortly thereafter, it popped up again. This time I clicked no. does that mean I lost whatever email I may have been sent? The time set in avast is for 120…I guess that means minutes-don’t know for sure.
No, the email won’t be sent but will stay into outbox, waiting for a better chance 8)
No, for sure, seconds.
Nothing in the outbox…120 seconds don’t give you much slack! I’ve been away from the computer, with it on, for a couple of hours-came back and checked the mail and there’s always a little envelope with bubbles (yep, bubbles) in the system tray, blinking to let me know mail has arrived. That’s the way it’s always done before. Haven’t seen that I recall, a “Connection Timeout” before and don’t know what triggered it.
Are you saying Mailwasher was trying to send an email or was it trying to download the partial content to identify spam?
If the latter, I personally don’t feel there is a requirement to have avast scan the mailwasher content. Mailwasher is only downloading the headers and a small part of the email text, no attachments and it is viewed in plain text, so I feel there is a very limited risk.
For me I exclude Mailwasher in the avast4.ini [MailScanner] section.
[MailScanner] IgnoreProcess=MailWasher.exe
The choice is your if you feel the risk doesn’t warrant being scanned, then avast will only scan the email that you download with your email program.
Please insert the line
Log=20
to file C:\Program Files\ALWIL Software\Avast4\Data\avast4.ini under [MailScanner] for detailed logging.
Then send one mail (or retrive mail if incoming mail is the problem), which will generate the log file. After that, post the last lines of the log file C:\Program Files\ALWIL Software\Avast4\Data\log\aswMaiSv.log. Thanks.
Ok…I did all the avbove. Added “IgnoreProcess=Mailwasher.exe” and added Log=20. Then sent myself a message from my webmail service. It came into mailwasher but, when I clicked"Process Mail" it wouldn’t do it like it usually does. Anyway here’s the result, Tech, of that log.
2/20/05 17:55:38 00000408: Log settings changed 20(0x00000014)
12/20/05 17:55:38 00000408: IgnoreProcess settings changed Mailwasher.exe
12/20/05 17:55:38 00000408: IgnoreProcess set Mailwasher.exe
I deleted Log=20, went back to MailWasher and hit Process Mail again and this time received it. This is the resulting log after that.
12/20/05 17:55:38 00000408: Log settings changed 20(0x00000014)
12/20/05 17:55:38 00000408: IgnoreProcess settings changed Mailwasher.exe
12/20/05 17:55:38 00000408: IgnoreProcess set Mailwasher.exe
12/20/05 18:11:48 00000408: Log settings changed 1(0x00000001)
12/20/05 18:12:02 00000E54: --POP Mail is clean
12/20/05 18:12:03 00000E54: --POP Mail is clean
I think removing or changing the log level won’t change anything on email processing (sending or receiving).
Sorry, seems that anything else changed meanwhile :-\
Well, Tech-perchance a light will come on eventually for this problem. It’s not as cut and dry as we like to think. Computers are marvelous toys but, we never know all there is about them…no one, never. Not even “Senoir Gates!” ;D
