This happened a while ago. My dad was updating from NIS 2005 to 2006 because his subscription had expired about a month ago before he got the time to renew. So while he was getting a new subscription he dicided to update to version 2006, I walk into his office and ask what the problem was cause he was mad. And he says the damn Norton won’t update. I say to him what are you trying to update? he says, the license because it expired so I payed for an upgrade to the new version 2006. Then he tells me he installed it restarted like Norton asked and it was still Norton 2005 with an expired subscription. But the free bonus of Norton Password Manager 2004 got installed, lol. So I say to him why not try avast? it is free and if you like it and want a few more features you can buy the pro version. Then he says because I don’t trust your antivirus cause you have had to many viruses in the past year (i have had none). Then I say fine use Norton and get screwed and walked out. Next day I ask so did you get Norton installed? he says no. I ask why, he says because it won’t install because I am missing a SP for windows. I ask what SP he is running he says SP2 i say that is the latest version, there are no other SP’s out yet. So just to prove he is wrong I download the NAV 2006 and uninstall avast! my system slowed down by about 70%. It installed and was working (supposedly) it scanned had real time and did what it was supposed to do for the price of over half of your resources. So I take it off reinstall avast! and say it works fine on my system fine. 3 weeks later he finaly get the problem fixed and it is running (supposedly). I told everyone this because I wanted to say how foolish people can be when they may think something free is not as good as something that you need to pay for.
I think the free programs can sometimes be better then paid ones. Norton is one of those you just wanna get rid of : I hated Norton. Used too much memory and the start-up is slow.
Actually despite what people say, I’ve found Norton and Avast comparable - having problems with neither. Actually in retrospect, Norton has a faster scanning speed then Avast! (even when both are set not to scan archived files).
Yes, I agree. I don’t understand why its so bloated - loading times are increased by quite a bit. Although, I have never had a problem with Norton’s detection rate. I think if they reduced the application size to a smaller anti virus it would be much better, but also less profitable for Norton.
Tech, have you found a perfect anti virus ? I’m actually just curious. I have tried almost every anti virus (free and commercial) that is available and haven’t found one I have liked.
Well, although there is not a final word in any kind of sotware, I see, really, very little advantages in other antivirus besides avast.
Detection is my only concern now and it’s being improved.
Pro-active detection (Heuristics) wouldn’t hurt that much… although it’s not Alwil policy.
For me, signatures for spywares and other kind of malwares would be nice too.
Buh, although I detect your sarcasm, the university does offer it for free. I’m trying to decide between Norton, Avast, and a few others. My only problem with Avast! is that it doesn’t have the firewall too, which is what I like with Norton - I like the all in one.
You mean a security suite? Some people here dump Norton cause the security suite just bloated their PC and slow it down. You can bundle up your own security suite and not slow down your PC for free if you like. Avast! is just an antivirus software, if you want an firewall you can find a couple of free firewalls that are excellent with avast! like Zone Alarm, Kerio, and Comodo
