It happened that one time. It hasn’t happened since (and I’ve been online and using the search function a lot) but it was continuous.
So it was just one site ?
Run for a day or so and if it doesn’t recur I will remove my tools
Will do. Thanks again!
It happened twice in the past 10 minutes. Once I was checking my email on hotmail and the other time I was checking my yahoo account. Both times it redirected me to some odd yahoo search engine site.
The weird thing is I’ve been online all day and used the search function numerous time. ???
So it seems it is redirecting me but not when I use the search function. It just happens when I click on a link. Strange.
Could you post a link where this happens but use HXXP instead of HTTP so it is not clickable
If/when it happens I sure will. Thanks.
Nothing so far. Thank you, thank you, thank you for all of your help ;D
Let me know tomorrow if all is well and I will remove my tools
Everything seems to be fine. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
New, bigger problem. Today I turned on my laptop and got the “operating system not found” error. I hit f2 and it doesn’t show my hard drive. I’m guessing it is due to the fact that I left my laptop in my hot car for 3 hours but I’m hoping maybe it was something to do with the previous problem.
That is not a malware symptom - does it work after cooling down ?
Nope. The weird thing is it wasn’t even that hot to the touch. And it was parked in the shade. I guess I lost all the photos I had yet to back up. And I guess I’ll be installing a new HD. The worst thing about all this is that I have a 24 hour train ride with no laptop. Ugh. Anywho, thanks for your help.
Should I even bother trying to use the windows disc I have and trying to recover the files on the drive or just bin it?
You could put the old Hardrive into a caddy and then extract the data that way http://www.laptopbits.co.uk/Database_files/Hard_Drive_Accessories.htm
If you haven’t got a caddy, not something many have lying around. I think you should at least try to recover your files, though I don’t know if the windows disk and recovery console, etc. carries out any file recovery function.
You might have some success with a Linux live CD (one that also recognises NTFS file format) and see if the drive is dead or alive. If alive it might be possible to extract files to a USB stick.
I do have a caddy (although I always called it an enclosure.haha). The problem is that it is Austin, TX and I’m in Marfa, TX…9 hours away. This train ride is going to be horrible. Oh well, thanks again guys.
I now have two caddies one IDE and one SATA
But it may well be worth recovering them using either Linux or a PE environment (OTLPE)
I’m sure I only have a sata caddy for 2.5s (I do have both for desk top hd)…is the linux cd extraction doable with someone like (limited computer skills)?
Me again. So, it turns out that the hard drive did in fact come loose. That problem is solved.
Just one thing. There are some strange files that I’m not sure whether to delete or not. They are DAT file, LOG1 file, LOG2 file, BLF file, REGTRANS-MS file, REGTRANS-MS file.
Thanks again.
