Another update question

I’ve been using version 5 free satisfactorily now for sometime, but have a question.

I’m on broadband (cable and router), but the computer is not on all day.
I have the update interval set at the default 360 minutes.
EDIT: Default is 240 minutes.
I have the direct connection box ticked, I don’t use a proxy.
No other boxes are ticked.

My question is, every time I start the computer, it attempts to
update even if it’s within the 340 minute windows.
For example, I start the computer in the morning after being off
all night, it updates, and I may use the computer for a few minutes then shut it off.
Then maybe a 1/2 hour later, start it up again after which Avast
attempts an update. I’m guessing this starts the timer again?
Do I need to tick the ‘connected all the time’ box?
EDIT:This make no difference.
Sorry for being such a noob on this.

Coming from Avira, you set a specific time for updates. That doesn’t mean they always happen though.
Thanks in advance.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure Avast (by default) tries to update as soon as the computer is turned on.

Then, at the update interval if the computer has been on for that long.

It’s never bothered me, so I’ve never looked to change it, but I believe changing this behavior has been discussed a few times in the forums already. Unfortunately, I don’t remember what threads they were in, but I supposed you could have a look, or google search for the answer.

Ok, thanks. I know it’s not a big deal, I was just wondering.
What’s important is that the updates happen and are dependable, unlike Avira some times.

This is true.

Avast updates are pretty good, usually 2 per day.

The lag when you start the computer can be a little annoying, I agree, but there’s a setting where you can delay the loading of avast services until the system services have started, which seems to help. I don’t have ver. 5 on my computer, and I can’t remember where to go to find that setting, but again, it has been discussed in the forums before.

Yes, I know how to do that.
Like I said, it’s not a big deal and I can live with it.

I apologize for the double post.
Thanks for the info.

Sure, no prob.

Does it matter if it look’s for an update every time you turn on computer, only takes a couple of second’s and if there is nothing to update then it hasn’t downloaded anything anyway. I have mine set to check update every 120 mins and i dont have either of the box’s ticked under update parameter’s. The default setting for update’s is 240 mins by the way. Loading avast service’s after other’s is setting’s/troubleshooting if your having slow downs.

Ok, thanks.
No, it does not matter, I was just curious.
You’re correct about the default time, my error.
