Another VRDB icon problem.

I cannot find the VRDB icon anywhere after installing Avast 4 free edition.

The installation seemed to go well but it never put the VRDB icon in my system tray. I do have the Avast icon but when I right click it there is no option to split into two icons.

I’ve also tried repairing the installation several times, and have uninstalled/re-installed three times (twice with a fresh program download).

After reading this forum I also looked in the avast4.ini file for the appropriate lines to edit but cannot locate anything relating to bubbles.

Finally, running ashdisp.exe had no effect at all.

I’m running the software on a Pentium 4 Dell with 512 meg ram. I do use Zone Alarm but haven’t noticed any conflicts. Zone Alarm was disabled during the last install. AVG is installed but not running. MS Antispyware is resident.

Can anyone offer any other ideas?

What is your OS?
Is the icon hidden in the taskbar, click the < arrow ‘Show Hidden Icons’ to the left of the system tray (where the clock is). If it is there ensure that you make it ‘Always Show’ in the Start, Properties, Taskbar, Customize…

Which did you set into avast4.ini file? Did you compare your settings with mine (click ‘Settings’ in my signature)?
Isn’t the VRDB icon merged into the main ‘a’ blue icon?

My OS is Windows XP Home Service Pack2. All the updates are current.

And no, I do not hide inactive icons. I like to know what’s running.

I didn’t make any changes to the ini file because I could not locate any lines relating to the icon ballons. I did compare to your settings but wasn’t sure if should add lines that seemed missing.

And no, the icons are not merged. There is no option when I right click the A icon to seperate them.

Another strange quirk: I just logged into a non-adminstrator account and the VRDB icon is present there, but when I come back to my account (administrator) its gone.

Should I just create the VRDB in the other account and keep life simple, or is there a better solution?

This strikes me as a possible cause of problems. I would try uninstalling this then a registry cleaner then a repair of Avast then re-install AVG .
Having said that i cannot remember ever (in 4 years) having a need to utilise the VRDB.

Well, there’s the little i-ball I was looking for.

As soon as I uninstalled AVG and rebooted there it was. I’m not sure about reinstalling this.

Thanks to all for the help.

With the older versions of AVg you used to be able to get away with it being installed and not running as a back-up secondary scanner, now with the later versions there can be conflict as you have found. It is not recommended to have two resident scanners installed, even if one is not running, because they will have created registry keys that can conflict.

Many use on-line scanners as a secondary scanner (not Panda’s as it doesn’t encrypt its signatures, which get detected later).

Just a little info:

I use AVG as a backupscanner with no conflicts with Avast.
But I have not INSTALLED the resident parts of AVG, just on-demand parts.

To be on the safe side I have disabled all processes from AVG at startup and enables them only when necessary at on-demand scanning or updating AVG.

And beeing a bit paranoid I turn them off afterwards to be on the safe side.(with a batch file that handles this on/off handling.)

Good luck!

Thanks again for the helpful comments.

I did try reinstalling AVG after re-establishing the VRDB icon and it disappered again. so AVG is gone on this machine.

Interestingly, I’ve used Avast with the current version of AVG as a back up on four Compaq’s with no conflicts, but have turned to BitDefender for my back up scanner on this Dell.

One way or another I’m keeping Avast, but I do like to install a back up just in case my internet connection gets killed.

And and off-topic point that says alot about Avast: We’ve used Norton AV at work since the early nineties (not my decision). Three weeks ago one of the pcs displayed a windows message that some system files were no longer recognized. The 4 versions of beagle that had infected the machine turned off the firewall, ate up Norton, and blocked internet access. Norton could not be reinstalled. I installed Avast from a CD and not only did it clean the beagle worms but also found virii from 1994 hiding in some archive files. Norton had 11 years to find something Avast found in a couple hour scan. I just can’t say enough about Avast. The pro version is installed on all the work pc’s now.

Glad we could help, welcome to the forums.
