Tutorial for Submitting Files to Avast

Why ?
If you believe that you have a file on your computer that might be an undetected\New virus Here are the steps you can take to make Avast’s staff aware of it:

  1. Before sending you file make sure that Avast is up to date by right clicking on the Avast tray icon → Updating → iAVS Update. Then if the file is still undetected GOTO Step 2

  2. Then to see if other Antiviruses are detecting this file goto www.virustotal.com. Then GOTO Step 3

  3. Now right Click on the suspicious file and select Send to → Compressed(zipped) Folder. If you get an error message reboot your computer and boot in Safe Mode and try the same procedure. After this is done GOTO STEP 4

  4. Once the file is in the compressed folder double click on it to open it and goto File → Add a password. This will prompt you for a password, type “virus” (without the ") in both boxes and click OK. GOTO Step 5

  5. Open your Email Client(example: Outlook Express) or goto your online mailling service and create a new email, send the email to virus(@)avast.com (replace (@) by @ ). GOTO Step 6

  6. In the subject type Undetected Virus or anything that you feel describes the problem. GOTO Step 7

  7. Finally click to send an Attachement and select the ZIP File that you created in step 3. Click to Send the Email.

You are Done !!

If you have a confirmed sample (VirusTotal check) that is undetected by avast you can add it to the User Files section of the avast chest and send it from there without the need to Zip and password protect the sample attachment.

To add a file to the chest:

  1. right click the avast icon, select ‘Start avast! Antivirus’, Menu, Virus Chest
    or run C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashChest.exe.

  2. click the User Files icon, now from the menu, File, Add (see image),

  3. from the pop-up window navigate to the file and click Open and close the other window.
The file should now be in the User Files section of the chest.

Send to Alwil Software:

  1. Click the User Files icon, select the sample you want to send (single click).
  2. Right click and select Email to Alwil Software, or using the File, Email to Alwil Software (see image).
  3. A window will pop-up enter any additional information that might be helpful and click Send Mail.
  4. This will encrypt the attachment and create an email in your outbox ready to be sent.
These submissions from the chest are filtered from the other 4000+ emails sent to virus@avast.com every day, so it may get actioned quicker.
