Anti-Rootkit Shield is Causing Some Game to Crash on Launch

After a bit of trial and error (and some back and forth with tech support), I have discovered that Avast’s Anti-Rootkit Shield is somehow crashing some games as they start up. The games work fine when the shield is turned off.

Has anybody else had this issue? What causes this?
