One of our home computers used XP. As we already have a relatively new laptop and a relatively new tablet we had no intention of upgrading it, so I switched it to Linux Lubuntu.
Could anyone advise me:
Whether I can get Avast for Lubuntu?
Where I can find an antimalware, it seems MBAM don’t do a Linux version?
How I can find out whether I am a running a firewall please?
There is Antivirus Software for Linux, but outdated and not really needed cause there is almost no Malware on Linux and it cannot do much Damage.
2.There is some available but not officially supported for the newest versions of Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Lubuntu/Xubuntu (These are just Ubuntu with different desktop enviroments and some other programs, be sure to install the Lubuntu 14.04 version which will go out soon)
3.Go to the software Manager/Software Center and search for gufw which is the graphical interface for ufw, the firewall thats preinstalled on Ubuntu and similars.
BY DEFAULT THE FIREWALL IS OFF
Fantastic, thanks. I’d read there was no need for antivirus and antimalware on Linux but didn’t trust it until your reply. I’ll set the firewall now and just let everything run as normal, making sure to update to the new Lubuntu when it arrives.
If I get used to it, I may even change the Windows 8 laptop to a more advanced form of Linux because the almost no viruses and no malware thing sounds good.
If you want to upgrade a bit stronger system then i would use Ubuntu, OpenSUSE or if you want Manjaro.
But Ubuntu would be the best cause its the most widely used system and there are many sources to get help from.
But many people dont like their interface, and the way they are heading. OpenSUSE is more the traditional Desktop from Windows.
Maanjaro is a Rolling Release so you never have to reinstall it other than youre having problems.
I might switch the system of my grandpas computer to Linux cause some Virus or maybe something else killed the system,
its completely unusable.
I have never used Linux that much. Just in Virtual Machines.
Under Linux there is no Microsoft Office or Photoshop and Software like that.
But there is Open Source Software like GIMP or Libre Office for that which is also available on Windows.
Also you could get some driver and or hardware issues but there are mostly Workarounds for that, just search the internet.
Also some cameras, printers etc. are not supported or only with Open Source drivers.
But Ubuntu and Distributions that are based on it are good in hardware support.
OK, thanks. The Libreoffice could be a problem. I don’t use Microsoft Office, I prefer Openoffice, but at least with Openoffice you can save in doc and pdf which are readable on all systems. As I often have to send work off, it would be a problem if Libreoffice has its own saving format.
Libre Office and OpenOffice are almost the same, Libre Office split from Open Office.
I think you can also save as pdf, doc and docx in Libre Office. Im running Office 2013 Professional here so i cant check that.
If you need a distribution on another computer you can take a look at this list: http://quidsup.net/reviews/?p=2013-full
