I’ve got Chi’s same problem: the program doesn’t work. Last week it was OK, but now it doesn’t scan appears an orange bar and then the splash screen closes. I followed the instructions in FAQ, tried to repair and finally reinstalled Avast, but it still has problems.
I have XP and a program called Spybot, no other antivirus.
I can’t take a conclusion by the analysis of your setup.log… sorry, sometimes nothing is done, sometimes checkings are done but the version is updated.
Did you have any other antivirus in the past in this computer?
Do you use a firewall?
So you decided to use avast right? If yes try uninstall avast(Follow as Tech said) and the other anti-virus installed on your system. Then reinstall avast on your system and i saw this on your log (general License key generated Demo) Did you register the key for avast?
Log shows that installation at 28.04.08 was quite successfull. So the problems are arising during AV start. Probably it is necessary to look at Windows log in Event Viewer and search for error events during services start.
Re-installed again and still not working.
Everything seems normal, but when I use Internet the red circle appears. And it just can’t work: the same orange bar appears and then nothing.
Ok, Event Viewer. I’ve found this:
Tipo evento: Errore
Origine evento: avast!
Categoria evento: (4)
ID evento: 90
Data: 02/05/2008
Ora: 16.50.16
Utente: N/D
Computer: XPSP2
Descrizione:
AAVM - scanning error: Aavm: FetchGlobalCounters cannot open mapping - server DOWN???, 00000002.
“Cannot write file”. My computer is becoming boring.
I uninstalled and installed the new version, but the situation is the same.
But I’ve found a “Symantec_Lan.exe” in my WINDOWS folder: remaining of a past antivirus? I can’t delete it.
Guess what…it was infected. I’ve deleted it.
Avast! seems to be able to scan single files or folders and delete dangerous files, but I can’t put an infected file in the Virus Chest: “error RPC”
The RPC error is often related to having another AV or remnants of another AV on your system so it would be worth trying the Tool Tech mentioned just in case.
Ladies and gentlemen, Avast finally works!
A worrying red icon from Windows security center told me my antivirus was outdated, so I updated it again, booted…and the circle disappeared! Now it works, even though I still have problems scanning from splash screen.
Thank you everybody, you’ve been very kind and patient.
