My Avast Free Antivirus is not updating since morning it shows an error “The Package is broken.”
Please help me …!!!

Try a repair of avast:
XP - Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and select Repair, click next and follow.

Vista, win7 - Control Panel, Programs & Features, uninstall a program, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Uninstall/Change and select Repair, click next and follow.

You may need to reboot after the repair.

I tried to repair but it failed :frowning:

OK, I take it that the error displayed to the screen when the repair failed was suggesting download the full update (or words to that effect).

next step - avast! Virus Definitions Update - Manual Download VPS Update (virus definitions, vpsupd.exe, approx 74.4 MB). - Save the file to your hard disk, locate where you saved it and double click it and that should carry out the virus definitions update.

It sorted out …Thanks DavidR  8)

No problem, glad I could help.

Welcome to the forums.

I’m having this exact same issue. My definitions and program will not update due to a “broken package” and avast will not let me use the Repair function, saying I need to apply a full update. Upon trying the VPS update posted above, a message tells me that the “VPS database is already up to date.”

I’m also getting that Driver_IRQL_not_less_or_equal aswnet.sys BSOD right after bootup…

You may need to do a clean install.
Download the avast uninstall tool http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
Just follow the instructions.
Do a “fresh” install.
Reboot.

Did the clean install…so far so good! Definitions are up to date and I haven’t encountered any broken package errors.
(No BSOD yet either, but that may be a whole other issue to deal with if it reappears. And yes, I’ve seen the numerous other threads regarding Win8 BSOD so I won’t start a new topic here. )

Glad everything turned out for the good. 8)
