First of all, I’m not very computer literate. Secondly, about a week ago I got the WIN32-Trojan-gen (other) virus with the constant pop up warnings from avast! that would not delete. I took much of this advice on this board such as downloading and running trojan hunter, ewido, booting in safe mode and running scans. Nothing worked. I thought it was funny that I’ve never had a virus before, and only 2 weeks after installing avast!, I got this one. Anyway, since I couldn’t get rid of it, I uninstalled avast!, and I purchased V-Com Fix It Utilities. I have since ran their scan, ewido, and trojan hunter, as well as a couple of other online scans. All found 0 viruses. Now, my internet will not stay online but about 2 minutes after you first turn on the computer. It will let me connect (I use cable modem), and go to as many websites as I can in about 2 minutes, and then it gives me the “page cannot be displayed” message. If I restart (and I have a 100 times), it does the same thing, the internet will work for about 2 minutes and that’s all until I restart. Keep in mind that without internet, I can’t download anything, can’t do HIJACKTHIS, or even windowsupdate. Does anyone have any suggestions or help, PLLEEEASE!!! I have gone to my internet, and it is set correctly and it says my modem is working fine. Sorry it’s so long, but I wanted you to know what led to this problem since I can’t post my hijackthis. The only time I can get online to check for help is at work when I can get online. Thanks
Hi Cocoa,
You very probably have a Rootkit infection, which means the infection is hidden and cannot be removed, although avast! can see the rootkit itself, and throws up a warning about this.
These rootkits are very difficult to remove with any anti-virus program, and the presence of the rootkit means a hacker has gained complete control of your computer and has had time to install so-called ‘backdoor’ programs. In a nutshell, this means your computer doesn’t belong to you anymore, and you are not likely to be able to clean it.
Don’t waste your time: back up any important documents, photos, email addresses etc and find the rescue discs that came with your computer and either restore it to factory settings or reformat and reinstall the OS.
If you have XP, turn on Windows firewall and visit the Windows update centre and download all critical updates. Then install avast! and you should be safe.
(If you don’t have XP, you will have to download a free firewall like Zone Alarm.)
Thanks, Frank. Unfortunately, you confirmed what I was afraid of. I do have an XP. I don’t have any critical info on my computer, it’s just a matter of finding my disc (I’ve moved since I’ve had this computer). Thanks for all your help. It was your replies to others with this virus that gave me the knowledge to do all that I tried already.
Frank, one more stupid question. If I can’t find my disc, will someone elses work that has the same computer? I think I already know this one.
I finally got it fixed!!! Thanks for all your help, Frank!
