It’s not my pc, running XP SP3. Sudenlly all program files are gone, all folders in start menu shows empty… If trying to start from desktop shortcut, it searches file location. Also, a lot of pop ups shows. I’m trying to solve that problem via phone atm, but it’s hard. Now we managed to start avira for full scan. Any suggestions what can it be?
Damn, uh… good luck with that. :o
Are you using Avira and avast at the same time?
Does Avira scanning reveal anything?
Well, that computer has avira only, any other security and most other software is somehow disabled - start menu for example in spyware blaster folder shows empty, and so on. Computer is not here, I’ll go next weekend to fix it. avira scan removed some trojans, dowloader and few other nasty things, but still, no programs left ;D Next weekend I’ll do documents backup and I’ll make fresh reinstall with avast on board. It’s hard to say what a hell it’s going on, when computer is 150 km away from me, problems are discussed by phone, and it has only basic users - while PC works it works And it really stopped working…
By the way, from free hard disk space amount I know the programs still inside computer - something just disabled most of them…
Consider LogMeIn (https://secure.logmein.com/).
just my opinion - I would ask the infected computer owner to use a rescue disk. well ya, if its far from you, then of course you cant do that since it requires reboots. instead you would give him some instructions on how to use the rescue disk. if that person has no problems reinstalling windows, no problem.
edit : i found some really good tools for remote desktop thing : http://www.filehippo.com/software/networking/
nmb
Showmypc is another good tool for remote desktop/laptop.I use it

well i think the software links we have been posting here might not help because the system might need reboots and may also need switches to safe mode. :-\
the infection might be a patching one. if it is, rescue cds are the way to go. i need not tell this, you guys all know that. don’t you?
Hi =YLAP=,
The Finish av-vendor F-Secure has published online a free Linux Rescue CD so Windows users can scan their systems for malcode and restore lost folders and files… The CD has 119MB has an anti-virus scanner and also programs like PhotoRec, TestDisk and smartmontools. First mentioned is a recovery tool for data that have incidentally been removed or damaged/corrupted system files… TestDisk is a recovery tool to restore a lost partition, while smartmontools has specific utilities to check on S.M.A.R.T. values of the hard disk.
It is also possible to place the Rescue CD onto a USB-stick/pendrive to scan from there. All of the CD runs on a new Knoppix distro and a new F-Secure security platform. The av-vendor warns however that it is not possible to scan encrypted disks or files, but this sounds logical, so Ylap use it in this case, get it here: http://www.f-secure.com/linux-weblog/files/f-secure-rescue-cd-3.11.23804.zip
