When I turned on my computer this morning a warning came up that avast was unable to update. I rebooted my computer right away without checking anything else and the update worked normal as it always has. Anyone else experience this. Just curious at this point. Thanks.
What update was that, a normal sequence update or a streaming update that gave that hick-up?

Well the computer had been turned off for over 12 hrs so it was the usual update that I get when I first boot up in the morning. Maybe the server was so busy that it happened. I don’t know. I will see if I get the next scheduled update OK,also will see what happens tomm morning when I boot up. This never happened before and I didn’t change any settings. Just one of those weird things
Do you have a dynamic or static IP address?
Once in a blue moon a change of IP address right at an update will cause that kind of temp glitch.
Frankly, I have noticed a couple of times over 6 or so years that sort of thing happening. Always straightened up the next time, unless there were already known issues going on with a particular unit. Wouldn’t sweat it too much if the next time all goes as it should and it doesn’t happen again soon.
Well as a computer novice I really don’t know the difference between a dynamic or static IP address. That being said it may have just been a hic cup. Just that when something like this happens to someone like me who doesn’t know much about computers in general I like to inquire about it to see if something may be wrong. Like I said,I’ll wait to see if this happens again.
Okay, I’ll help with that bit of info. Just like a static display of aircraft at an airshow – the aircraft stays in the same place during the show – a static IP address means you always have the same one. Costs a little more to the ISP. Of course, the other – dynamic – means it may change from time-to-time and if you have a dialup connection, it changes a lot more than just time-to-time.
I rather doubt it matters if you have a dynamic (most of us do) or a fixed IP address (normally you have to pay extra for a fixed IP). Dynamically assigned IPs on a broadband connection don’t change that frequently from when first established after a boot.
The IP a user is on (fixed or otherwise) doesn’t play any part in the avast update process as it is the connection being established (or rather failing) to an avast download server, that generates this error.
The most common failure issue in the first auto update check after boot, if the avastUI, Settings, Updates - Proxy Setting, is set to ‘Auto detect (use Internet Explorer settings)’ that can fail if for whatever reason it can’t get this info from IE.
So it is best to have it on Direct connection (no proxy), if you don’t happen to connect to the internet by proxy.
In all honesty if you are going to start investigation the first time something happens, you are going to be spending a lot of time investigating hiccups. For me I only investigate when there is a pattern, e.g. multiple instances of update failure.
I agree with DavidR here, remember it could be sheer circumstance, and you always could check updates manually also. If this a one time incident I would not give it too much attention,

Thanks all,will just monitor it.
You’re welcome.
Well, while the topic is hot it’s my turn to gain a little more knowledge. I’m confused. If I lose my Internet connection an update continues? Stops? Or a different kind of popup shows from Avast when the connection is back again? I’m a little confused.
.
ManyQs,
You should start your own topic about this, knitting on to another topic related or not is just cause for confusion,

It was DavidR’s post that I was asking about. In this thread. But what the heck. No sweat to me. I was just asking. No answer is fine, too. Forget it.

No problem here.
Same here vps 120415-2
Just a quick note,it must have been just one of those glitches that happens on occasion because everything was fine this morning when I booted up the computer. As always thanks for everyones input.
