Appeal to Alwil Staff from an Avast XP user

Dear Alwil Staff,

PLEASE HELP US!!!

Many of us are loyal Avast! users and have used the programme for a long time.

Unfortunately, a lot of us who run Windows XP have been experiencing a lot of problems with Avast 5.0.377.

  • Incomplete installs (freezes at the final screen with the message ‘error: cannot connect to server’)
  • Blue screen of death at install and at other times
  • Computer hanging at random times - only option is a manual reboot
  • Problems running the ‘upgrade programme’ function - computer freezes
  • Computer freezing when surfing the web with Firefox

Please, PLEASE let us know what you are doing, or what we can do, to fix this problem.

As I said, you have a vast army of very loyal Avast! users who want to enjoy this fantastic new product.

Thank you and I really look forward to the response.

Yours sincerely,

Avastfan1

ok this is my experience with new avast.
firstable my pc is old [my favorite]…dell 8200 xp-sp3 768 rdram.
i also have sandboxie,keyscrambler pro an privoxy.windows firewall,adobe flash player was installed…
i was testing another AV…i uninstalled using zsoft-uninstaller,run -regseeker- clean registry and then look for leftovers…it found 14 …clean it…
i run WIPE [free] to clean all traces of windows.etc ,empty systm restore…reboot pc…just for the heck.
install new avast and everything is running perfect…no bsod’s,no lags,i can tell this app is even lighter than previous,
–that i remember when i had a bsod,it was because of my usb pci card,just removint,bootingpc,shut-oof pc,reinstall pc card- fix it…that’s me…

browsing is ok no problem,i even was at porn sites, warez sites, youtubeno problems…i took a quick scan=almost 4 min.

what i could suggest is to uninstall avast run regseeker-clean registry look for leftovers, run WIPE…empty system restore…and you may need to unplug your system for like 30 min to let it cool down…
hope this can help…and believe me assome as i see a problem i’ll post it…some people kno me for “always complaining for everything”…even updates…

I have done that already, and avast 5.0.377 is a mess in the upgrade process, i dont know why, i have been trying to install 5 pro, in my machine since it came out, and no success. I think there is something bad with the installer. But i havent heard a word from alwil, maybe an update to setup, i dont know, but something that makes the upgrade from 4.8 a success, plz!

i downloaded avast5 from filehippo …you sou did it since it came out, that day there were millions downloading avast 5,it could be the reason,“a bad download”…
-alsoi forgot to mention i didn’t chceck “google toolbar”…since google is not trustable.
afteruninstalling avast 5 ,running registry clean and finding left overs.you may need to defrag registry,i always do it with ntregopt.
good luck

did you remember to patch IE8 lately, even if you don’t use it.
i also use a reg file from blackviper “safe xp pro sp3”…and disable remote connection, filesharing.

I have XP SP3 and had no problems installing and running A5. A minor glitch obtaining auto updates seems to have been fixed with adjusting the settings. Apparently it all depends on what other software including security products are on your computer and how they interact with A5. I would think that there is no real problem the new Avast or that it is “buggy” On the other hand, on this same computer I can’t get MBAM to update…get a timing out error. ???

Use Outpost Firewall, SAS, Threatfire, Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster, Windows Defender, and WinPatrol and still on dialup for awhile yet.

Had the same problem and found the culprit: an incompatibility with MBAM real-time.
If you use MBAM, untick the option to have it start with Windows and reboot.
This worked for me.
I was able to install AVAST 5 (free) and it seems to work correctly.

@Francois

I run Windows xp sp3, I also have MBAM, but do not have it running. I just run it manually.
After installing Avast 5, whenever I clicked on any icon or file, the system would hang. Ctrl-alt-del showed no culprit. My only option was to manually reboot.

Glad it’s working for you. Prior to installing Avast 5, I went through add/remove, as well as ran the avast uninstaller in safe mode and ccleaner. There are a plethora of other products out there such as reg cleaner, Wipe etc. I hope it’s not necessary to use these products as well. I can’t imagine running the avast uninstaller and ccleaner in insufficient to clear any evidence of Avast 4.8.

@Marc999:
MBAMGUI.EXE is not showing in the Task Manager, right?
I only have the mbamservice, which only takes a couple of MB. (with real-time enabled and mbamgui running, it uses about 40MB)
I didn’t use MBAM at all after installing AVAST 5 (free).
I only use the File Agent in AVAST, by the way.

“Appeal to Alwil Staff from all Avast XP users”

I take a little bit of an issue with this statement. My OS is Windows XP, SP3, and except for one “minor” setting in the Free Avast v5, I LOVE this upgrade.
I think when most XP Avast users have somewhat more experience in configuering their settings, etc., things will settle down.

I just LOVE this new interface…much more user friendly. Many thanks to the Alwil team.

Yes somewhat over the top to say all XP users, not in my name.

Hi guys.

The only problem I have encountered is if there is a second update during the day. My A5 will not do it, not even manually, and a reboot just makes A5 to hang with a red circle and white X. I have not performed a repair yet. I am waiting for later on today if there is a new update.

Regards.

XP pro Spk 3_86
C.I.S. (firewall and D+).
Spy Sweeper 6.1 (no A/V)
Win Patrol Plus.
MBAM (On demand).

Likewise, no problems.

I meant to write an Avast user.

You can modify the First post and change the Title to reflect that.

The XP OS has certainly become more of an issue as Avast advances. :frowning:
I’m one of those who has had NO PROBLEM with Avast5 on either of my PC’s (a Lap Top running Windows XP Professional SP3 and a desk top running Windows XP Home SP3)
Having said that, I fully can appreciate the frustrations of the users who are having issues and the apparent lack of response…positive or negative
Goodluck to all those who’s frustration has become a rallying cry. 8)

Done. Thanks for the tip.
