application failed to initialize properly, avast error 10106 Help needed

I have the home edition of the avast antivirus softeware installed on my Machine at home. When I connected to the internet, it automatically downloaded some updates and installed them and was prompted to reboot, that ia where all these problems started.
I had the following messages
avast!: mail scanner warning (avast will not be able to protect incoming mail (IMAP Protocol) and (POP3 Protocol) error 10106
nilm. exe application error( application failed to initilaize properly (0xc0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application.

After clicking ok, the application error repeats itself indefinitely.
What can I do, please I need your help?
Thanks

Hi,

  • try running the mail protection wizard again, or adjust the settings according to manual/FAQs; please also supply info on your mail provider/client/settings/inet connection etc…

  • have you tried repairing or reinstalling avast ?

  • Does avast find a virus in a full scan ?

All of the above may work better in SafeMode (F8-Boot)

What is nilm.exe? Is it a program you know?

Dear All,

I have no idea of the program nilm.exe. it was generated based on the application error. Besides when my system boots, I really have no access to any of my programs. Whenever I clicked any application, it returns the information “insufficient resources to respond to your request”.
I could not even open Avast on my desktop through the icon, it just do not load and the above information is returned over and over again.
How do i repair the avast software in safe mode? Could you please giver me some specific directions and instructions.
The first time i installed avast, it detected a lot of virus during the system scan thoroughly.
It was the downloaded updates installation that is creating the problems now ,i guess, how can i remove them?
Thank you “whocares”.

This is something we need more info about…:

What did you do with the viruses ? Repair, move or delete them ?
do you still remember wich viruses were found, & where exactly ?
to get this info: try to access (open with Editor/Wordpad/Notepad) avast’S reports/logs somewhere in the avast (sub)directory

did you reboot the PC after that at all ?
did it work properly for a couple of reboots ?

Your Problems could be a due to a botched up virus/malware removal
do all other/ANY programs run at all ?

try running avast Cleaner from www.avast.com

and please post a hjackthis-Log : http://hjt.klaffke.de/en

P.S.:
According to Google, NILM could be …\National Instruments\Shared\License Manager\Bin\nilm.exe → probably not malicious…

SafeMode:

  • reboot and while the PC is restarting: repeatedly press or hold F8 until a menu appears.
  • then select safeMode;
  • go to ControlPanel → Add/remove programs and select avast → Uninstall/Repair

Originally after installing avats, I deleted the files that were infested after the qurantine process could not work.
There is one virus I remember “kiss and love”.
I rebooted the PC and it worked perfectly afterwards.
I began experiencing this new problem because of the updates from avast that were installed automatically.
I will remove or repair the avast software in safe mode as directed.
Due to this problem none of my software ( word, excel, matlab etc) installed is working. When you click the application icon, it returns "not sufficient resources to run the request "

Thanks “whocares”

What operating system do you use?

I used Windows XP professional.

Any instructions for dealing with that problem would be appreciated. Thanks

have you already do a online scan?

Hmm, strange… what is the exact error message you get when you try to run some of your applications?
Also, it would be good to know the names of the viruses found and the files deleted… check the avast! Log Viewer, please - is there anything in the “Warning” cathegory?

I have the same problem with nilm.exe

nilm. exe application error( application failed to initilaize properly (0xc0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application.

After clicking ok, the application error repeats itself indefinitely, it takes up all the CPU time. Eventually the system halted.

My IE will come up automatically and go to some website. I don’t know if it is related to the nilm.exe problem or not.

Is this a virus? If anyone have a solution it will much appreciated. :-*

I found this after a google search, it would appear that nilm.exe is used by some form of License Manager. Does this ring any bells with those with the problem or does this path look familiar?

C:\Program Files\National Instruments\Shared\License Manager\Bin\nilm.exe

David

I think I know what it is. I develop software that uses some National Instruments (NI) DLLs–specifically, the NI-VISA DLLs. I believe nilm is also a National Instruments dll.

Here’s the problem. If I attempt to load the NI DLLs when my program initializes without having the proper NI registry key defined (specifically HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\National Instruments\NI-VISA for Windows 95/NT) I get exactly the same “application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142)” error that you are getting. This registry key and all its subkeys and values are created when NI-VISA is properly installed. I discovered the solution when I try to run my program on a system that does not have NI-VISA installed. If I even change one character of this registry key on a properly configured system, I get the same error. Interestingly, to make this error go away and to allow my software to completely load without errors, all I need to do is manually define this one registry key. I don’t even need to define any subkeys or set any values. Of course, some other issues may arise as a result of not installing NI-VISA the way it was meant to be. But I can work around most of that by copying all the DLLs I need to the application’s working directory.

I believe, but have not confirmed, that this message may even be more generic, and may actually arise as a result any DLL failing the load and initialization process ungracefully. For example, if the NI-VISA DLLs can’t find their configuration registry key entries, they may they may crash or fail on load, thus causing this error.

My guess is that you’ve somehow managed to remove the NI registry keys form your registry. Perhaps this was a result of a system restore or registry restore operation.
