Is there any evidence of this besides what MSN is claiming? Is this a desperate attempt by MSN to gain more Oulook.com users? Is this a trick by MSN? Or, is it fact?

I think this is FUD, for years it has been known that gmail had the right to monitor email content for marketing purposes, etc. This is/was in the T&C I believe.
This is one of the reasons why I wouldn’t sign up to a gmail account for many, many, years. I have broken this enforced abstinence ever since I got a smartphone, so that I can use my gmail account for some contacts/services, etc. so I can get notification on my phone when out. I can check the email from my phone and action it if it is urgent and it still leaves the email on gmail. When I come home I can go on-line on my PC and deal with those emails that are less urgent.
Am I concerned that they can look through my email, not really there is nothing sensitive in the emails I send or receive through gmail. Not to mention I honestly can’t recall (or am unaware of) ever having had a targeted advert, either on my phone or system as a result of using gmail.
I use a large hosts file and Firefox extension Webmail Ad Blocker, so I never see ads. Besides, I use Thunderbird to download my gmail messages. I think MSN is just grasping at straws.
It reminds me of a tacky smear campaign.

I think that those in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones, Micro$oft are no saints.
Edit: typo
I think it is not only Google to go through your e-mails for ad-launching purposes.
It is a question of “the pot calling the kettle black”.
Users do not like the idea, so an excellent issue to be used in a smear campaign.
As long as they say they won’t be evil, I go along with Google until proven otherwise,
and I do not need M$ to tell me,

Looking at their facebook page, this campaign seems to be working against Microsoft. Have a look at the many negative comments.
Such actions never worked,. So why should it work this time?

It’s not like Google has 10 employees that sit there and read users e-mails. It’s all machine scanned and is frankly on the same level as the personal data collection as with avast!'s CommunityIQ. If you’re that paranoid or you simply have very sensitive e-mails, you’ll be running a private e-mail server anyway, because that’s the only way to be sure. For everyone else who just want a very reliable free e-mail service, i think both Outlook and GMail are great options. Even if you have semi sensitive data on it.
