Are we to support this campaign?

Hi malware fighters,

There are people around that want to start a campaign to get IE6 browsers entirely from the web. Dump IE6 or you make browser developer unhappy, dump IE6 and find something more secure to browse with…

Are we to end 6? What is your opinion on this matter?

Every single reason they mentioned by itself is more than enough. The fact is that it IS obsolete. Nothing worked as it should on IE6. Just to forget security issues for a minute, for so long it was the only browser that did not support simple PNG with alpha transparency format. Of course there were workarounds (JavaScripts I used as well), but that was pain in the ass. Flash did not work properly without using again JavaScript code and SWFobject. It was so annoying… not to mention all other problems web developers had when they tried to make things work properly on all well known browsers. Not being able to have IE6 and IE7 installed on the same machine in the same time (again, it was possible but using some annoying tricks) was another thing that complicated things even more…

I for one will never miss it.

I’m in no rush to download a large IE7 installation file on dial-up, basically I never use it for browsing. So I can’t dump IE6 without installing IE7 as long as they are still doing security updates for IE6, this Dinosaur will stick with it ;D

Perhaps I will give IE7 a miss completely now they are espousing IE8 ;D

David, For updates, you have to run IE8 in IE7 emulation in order for updates to work. :'(

For updating what ?
If it is because IE8 doesn’t work with windows update, I would imaging that by the time I get that close that issue will have been resolved. After all IE8 is a beta, so perhaps it is a bit early for it to work with WU, though it would have been nice.

I have also long since abandoned WU, choosing to do my updates manually visiting the http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx site for the current patches and download only those that effect my system. That way I have a copy which I keep in case I need to reinstall it at a later time and don’t have to download on dial-up again.

I also use the Secunia inspector to ensure I have all the patches, etc. and I get the Shavlik Technologies newsletter which gives notification of what is coming on patch Tuesday.
