ashdesp.exe halt

Every time I shut down I get a system message that ashdesp.exe is not responding. It appears in the Avast directory and judging from the “ashserv” topic this is an avast prog . . . . What up? ???

Sawdust

ashDisp.exe is the GUI interface and the icon you see in the system tray, however, I’m assuming you have made a typo in the ashDesp.exe file name you gave.

Why this is happening is a little strange and the first time I have heard of this.

What is your OS?
How are you shutting down?
Have you ever had any other AV installed, if so what?

Also, which firewall do you use?
If you’re using XP, are you using an account with Administration rights or a common account?
Do you have any other security application installed?

I am 99% sure of the spelling of the file name. I will check it again when I shut down this time (done normally - start - turn off - turn off).

I am using XP and a relatively new machine (Athlon 64) and I have not had any other AV software on this machine. I did have zonealarm but have removed it because of the problems with the proxies even after resetting it to the “localhost”. I am using primarly firefox but also have IE and use it occasionally when communicating with Microsoft.

David is right, there isn’t ashdesp.exe but only ashdisp.exe

Are you using a proxy? Local or not?
Did you set correctly into avast settings AND your browser?

Oooooops - the spelling is ashDisp.exe

I have noticed another entry in the forum with the same problem - ken0069

I am using XP SP2
I have followed the insturctions which pop up for the proxy settings with zonealarm although that didn’t seem to correct that problem on my machine so I have totally uninstalled zonealarm and have no firewall at this time. No other AV prog or firewall have run on this machine except the XP firewall initially just after I built it several months back. The ashdisp.exe problem is only a few weeks old at most for me.

I will try the repair procedure as outlined in one of the relies to ken0069 ashdisp.exe hangup.

Why? It should work transparently if you’re using ZA free… nothing to do, nothing to change.
I have one computer with avast (and WebShield enabled) + ZA (free) + Windows XP SP2+
No troubles at all…

I didn’t get Tech’s message before reinstalling - but it didn’t work anyway - I still have the hangup on logout.

I guess it’s time to start looking for another AV prog.

Sawdust, are you using the last version of ZA? A new driver should correct its behavior with avast… it was expected at least.
Can you uninstall ZA for a while, boot, install avast and then install the last version of avast?

I have a XP SP2 system working smothly with both avast! and ZA (free) ::slight_smile:

Zonealarm was used - but has been uninstalled since this problem appeared. I can download the new version and try it - but what if I decide to scrap Zonealarm in the future and go with something else - is this problem going to reappear? Could there still be stuff resident in the registry or ini files that are causing this.

That would entirely depend if the problem was a Zone Alarm one.
You could run a registry cleaner to check for any zone alarm remnants in the registry.

OK - so far I am still putting up with the shutdown problem. But I have noticed that after I close the ashdisp.exe popup for a split second I see another popup that appears so briefly that I have not been able to read the whole thing - after several shut downs I have been able to get the name of the file concerned - dwwin.dll - and the note may say something to the effect of this file not initializing - would this file have anything to do with this problem??? After a search I found that the file resides in 3 /Windows subdirectories 1)Prefetch 2)system32 and 3)ServicePackFiles/i386

???

I have a feeling that the dwwin file is from Desktop Weather from a Weather Channel download. If I run Desktop Weather, I get this error and it only started appearing with a recent download. If I shut off Desktop Weather prior to shutting down my system, I do not get the dwwin.dll error message. Has anyone else found this causal connection? [/i]

When I say the file name the first thing I thought of was Dr Watson the windows error checking/reporting tool/program, this link also seems to suggest that.
http://www.hardwaresoftwarearticles.com/archive/index.php/t-11273.html

So if you havent got this Desktop Weather program installed it may relate to DRWatson.

Are there any entries in the windows Event Log as mentioned in the link to help track the falting module.

Well I haven’t installed Desktop Wx that I know of, nor Dr. Watson. That isn’t to say that either of these may have tried to install froma popup or along with something else . . . . and I refused them - therefore they may have left something on the machine. . . . . therefore I am going to rename that file and archieve and see what happens . . . another prog may be calling it, and I can find out what that is. I checked www.answersthatwork.com and there didn’t appear to be anything there to let me know what this dwwin.dll file does . . .

Dr Watson is an integral part of many windows OSes.

The dwwin.dll could simply be the dll associated to the Dr Watson program file dwwin.exe.

This from the link I gave shows a possible shutdown error associated to dwwin.exe (the initialisation of the dll, dwwin.dll), this may or may not have a knock on effect.

Are you getting any windows event log entries as I asked?
