ashDisp.exe can't run

I can’t make ashDisp.exe to run
My avast home edition was working fine until I had to mess with cutwail trojans.
After one of the reboots, I noticed there is no icon in tray and all my attempts to run ashDisp.exe failed.

I tried:

  1. Uninstall / Reinstall number of times.
  2. Repair registry
  3. exefix.reg and xp_exefix.reg to restore running exe entries.
  4. verified that C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4\ashDisp.exe is in the registry in the right place

At first MOST (but not all) exe stopped running, but now it’s ashDisp.exe.
By the way when I change .exe to .com it helped even on early stages, but I can’t change it for ashDisp.
As far as other progs, I have SUPERAntiSpyware running, but it was there way before problem started, and I did disabled it as a test anyway.
Any help is appreciate

1. Uninstall / Reinstall number of times

Have you tried the avast uninstall utility? http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html

How about a boot time scan?

Maybe a boot cd loaded with an Anti-Virus program?

Thanks for your reply,

  1. no I did not use uninstall utility, I uninstalled avast using “Remove programs”, I did try both their uninstall and repair options.
2 As far as boot CD - I’m using home edition that I downloaded (did it twice though)

I suspect that this somehow registry related, but can’t find the cure yet.
I’ll try uninstall utility tonight.
BTW I was trying to use Avira after uninstalling Avast! and their resident program did not start either. >:(

O yeah, boot time scan, did that it found 1 virus trace and I deleted it.

Deletion isn’t really a good first option (you have none left), ‘first do no harm’ don’t delete, send virus to the chest and investigate.

Try download Hijack This 2.0.2 and doing a system scan with a savelog file. Then report the log file in your next post. What did the warning say? Where was it from?

Help us so we can help you.
2 As far as boot CD - I'm using home edition that I downloaded (did it twice though

I meant a recovery boot CD. Such as http://ubcd4win.com/, http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/, or http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd (don’t know the legitimacy of that one though)

Oh, can’t forget the Avast BartPE CD either… but that one costs money. http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_bart_cd.html

Read the instructions, download and burn (maybe from another computer), finally use one of this rescue CD’s:

  1. Avira
  2. Kaspersky
  3. BitDefender
  4. F-Secure
  5. Dr. Web

I used Avira and Bit Defender’s rescue CD - as per Tech (thanks). While they did find some trojans, problem is still there, I cant run some exes - in particular - ashDisp, avira main console, HiJackThis

due to restrictions on the post size I’ll post it in 2 separate posts, may be some one will have a clue.

Are you running two antivirus at the same time in the same computer?

Also, the above would be an incomplete HJT log.
