AshDisp.exe failed to start...MSVCP71.DLL not found

I rebooted my computer to free memory up to play a cpu intensive game when i get the message after the reboot that AshDisp.exe failed to start because MSVCP71,DLL couldn’t be found.Don’t know what happened to cause this.Prior to the reboot i used secunia to check and make sure my programs were up to date.I installed a new version of realplayer bringing it up to 11.1.1 then rebooted.Don’t know if that has any relation to the problem or not. Also did some web browsing and email.Played a game for a few hours, but didn’t do anything like updating or messing around with any files or something.Hope someone can help!

I use avast 4.8 on Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit edition

Did you uninstall anything before the reboot? Or maybe the realplayer updater incorrectly removed the DLL…
Try Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs (may be called differently on Vista) / avast! Antivirus / Change/Remove / Repair

Might try downloading it from here: http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?msvcp71 (I’ve used the site before, and has worked fine).

Then unzip to your %systemrroot%\system32 directory. Might need to reboot after that.

Just read the instructions on the download site.

I repaired the program in control panel and rebooted.Works now.Don’t have a clue what happened, but it’s fixed. Thanks for the help.

Cool. Glad it works.

Thanks for the link to dll-files.com getting msvcp71.dll there worked for me.

I think Realplayer was the culprit on my machine, it is really bad because it disables Avast to the point where it can’t be repaired, uninstalled, reinstalled or updated.

Also Vista64 is awful at preventing you from copying files, I couldn’t get the new one into the Avast directory even after taking UAT off, and taking ownership of the folder, and having admin rights etc. etc.

On Vista64 the MSVCP71.dll files needs to be placed in the windows\Syswow64 folder NOT the windows\system32 folder.

Once this was done it all started working again. If Avast could change their install to ship the .dll file, and use one in their own folder that would protect them from a virus attack of this kind. I am now going to go and scan my machine, as while fixing this I ended up browsing unprotected.

Thanks again for your help, Cheers,

avast! install does ship this DLL.

Yeah, sometimes that can be a pain. I share in your frustration.

Glad the link to DLL-files helped though.
