ashMaiSv.exe has encountered a problem

ashMaiSv.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Avast Home Edition

This message occurs on a computer with a recently reformatted hard drive. It also did this before. Cannot see any particular reason why this is happening and the program appears to be running normally, hovering over the avast! icon shows 7 process available and six running. The question is this; with this error message, is the computer being protected from viruses?

Do you have a full text of the error as it often mentions a faulting module which is often not an avast file, just that it happens to be using it ?
If you are an XP user then check the windows event log and see if there is anything in there which should give these details.

The 7th provider is likely to be Outlook/Exchange which you don’t need unless you are using MS Outlook, not express. So you would appear to be OK

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.
If that doesn’t work try, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.

Here is the text of the error message.

ashMaiSv.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Please tell Microsoft about this problem. We have created an error report that you can send. We will treat this report as confidential and anonymous.

Since this is not my computer but a customer’s computer I do not have access to it. During the short time I had the computer and did all the work including installing avast!, I did not have this problem. However, this person said that this error message popped up even before the hard drive was formatted and all software reinstalled, even avast!. So, you see, this is a new, clean installation and the problem still exists and I think there is something about this particular model Gateway computer and avast! that doesn’t agree.

It does appear, however, to be otherwise running normal. Do you think this is true based on your knowledge of avast!?

Thanks for that, unfortunately it doesn’t mention a faulting module so it isn’t a very helpful error message.

There are occasions that I have errors like this (for other programs) and I simply restart the program or reboot if required and unless something becomes persistent I just do a watching brief to see if it becomes more frequently. Other than that I don’t do anything else, especially if the program appears to be working OK.
Once you have restarted or reboot as required, the protection should back to normal, just heck that ashMaiSv.exe is running in the windows task manager and in the avast On-Access Scanner window.

Problems like this could be down to some of the windows dll files but without any pointers to help it would be almost impossible to track down unless there is a more detailed error like viewing the prepared report “We have created an error report that you can send.”

So all I can suggest they monitor and watch for it to happen again and try to gather as much information as possible.

Thanks for the info. I appreciate the time you took to answer my questions.

Your welcome, I trust that everything is OK now ?
