AshMaiSv.exe keeps pinging server Please Help!!

umm I got a really freaky problem with my Avast! I’ma bit of a newb with progs and configurations and that sorta stuff, so go easy on me :wink:

I’m not at home atm so I cant post the exact error mssg that I’m getting, but rest assured I will when I get home :wink: basically its something along the lines of

“AshMaiSv.exe could not get a response from the server”

I checked that my firewall was allowing it “Norton Internet Security 2003” with latest updates, and that seems to be fine…its a really annoying issue to cos it freezes my sys to the point that I cant even open Task Manager to kill it…meaning a hard reboot :cry:

so far the only way I’ve managed to stop this happening is to uninstall Avast! from my sys altogether, which obviously running without the planets best AV (in my opinion anyways :wink: ) is not a wise idea at all I’m sure you’ll all agree anyways sorry for making this post so long I’ll just post some sys info and close this post…

hoping for a fast response as no AV has got me worried sick ???

System Info
OS = Windows XP SP1
CPU = 1.5Ghz Pentium 4
RAM = 256Mb SD
Graphics = Nvidia GeForce2 MX/MX400
Firewall = Norton Internet Security 2003 w/ latest updates
Antivirus = Avast! latest edition…(re-downloaded yesterday) (currently uninstalled due to above issue)

PS
I also have YahooPOP installed on my sys from a failed attempt at installing Mozilla Firefox. Could this create any issues??

PPS
Promise to get exact error mssg as soon as I’m back home :wink:

Are you saying that you had both nortan anti-virus and avast anti-virus running at the same time, if this the case, then you have a problem because running two anti-viruses at the same time will always cause conflics/problems/frezzes, you will have to choose between avast anti-virus and nortan anti-virus, this should then stop any problems (although i didn’t think avast would install itself if another AV as already on there)

no…sorry for the confusion caused there…I’m only using the firewall from Norton Internet Security not the AV…afterall Norton AV is junk :smiley: missed 75 items that Avast found on its 1st scan

but yeh. Only the firewall element and pop-up blocker elements of Norton Internet Security are on my machine NOT Norton AV :slight_smile:

Ahh i see ok then

What OS are you using?
What exact version of avast are you using?

EDIT: Also make sure norton firewall is alowing ashmaisv.exe to access the internet

coughs

OS = Windows XP SP1
as for Avast! version not 100% sure till I get home…pobably 1 or 2 hours from now. Pretty sure its 4.5, not sure what build tho

Do you have the mail correctly setup?
Please read the posts from Me, Igor and VLk on the first page in THIS THREAD

Ok also mabey disabling the firewall will help, because it may be blocking something since you installed 4.5.

oops :-[ guess I wasn’t to clear with this bit PS

I also have YahooPOP installed on my sys from a "failed attempt" at installing Mozilla Firefox. Could this create any issues??

I’m not currently using any mail clients…just using web based

I think it will be related to yahoopop.

Could you please try installing a version with more verbose logging so that we can find out more?

How to install the version with enhanced logging capabilities:

  1. Stop the Internet Mail provider
  2. Download the file http://www2.asw.cz/~vlk/ashmaisv.zip and extract its contents to the avast directory (overwrite existing files)
  3. Restart the Internet Mail provider

Then simulate the problem, and see the log file \data\log\aswMaiSv.log

Thanks
Vlk

Will do :slight_smile: again once I get home :wink: also i must mention again

I’m not currently using any mail clients…just using web based
altho I will keep running YahooPOPs while trying to simulate the problem again for the benefit of finding any possible conflicts these 2 progs might be having for other people in my situation :wink: well time to go home. Hopefully if I can simulate the situation again (which i most likely will ::slight_smile: ) I’ll post any additional info for u great guys to take a look at :slight_smile:
