Hi and welcome loreley
as you will notice if you right click A ball you have 6 providers probably running which may or may not all be nessesary , if for instance as i do not load mail to my pc i disable the outlook provider.
if you dont use instant messaging or p2p programs there are other providers you can disable. this may get memory usage to where you are comfortable.
hope this helps ![]()
Thanks ginblossom, I have tried what you said and the problem still exists. Anyways, thx as lot!
Could you please notify back when you get details on other A/V products as this is a topic often discussed and seldom is there a clear definitive picture on what other options requirements are and how they compare.
Yeah, this is a hot topic. I have used avg before and I didn’t experience this problem.
I don’t think the amount of memory it shows is correct. This can only be correct if Avast is scanning some big file/archive imo.
I have no idea. My memmonster shows that it eats up ~190mb for every time I checked. ![]()
Make sure you have no malware on your system (See the malware removal section on the page in my signature).
Also disable everything from loading at boottime that isn’t really needed for the system to work properly.
Let us know if that solves the problem.
Its wrong for sure. Such amount is only possible if you scan ISO CD image because there is some bug that almost kills avast! while scanning such files.
Otherwise memory usage of avast! never exceeds 18MB, 20MB at most (really extreme situations).
Thank you for your reply, I also agree there must be some problems exist. Maybe I reinstall it and see the problem still exist or not.
loreley, what is your operating system?
Win98
IS this the number you get just after a clean boot, or it starts OK (let’s say with 20M) and then keeps consuming more and more?
Igor (who’s generally our Win9x-guy) is currently not here - maybe we’ll come up with something anyway… ![]()
Thanks
Vlk
I have tried it at home, my memmonster showed that ashserv.exe consume 11Xmb of memory. I use WinMe at home. I suspect it is the problem of memmonster.
Well, I have tried kinda the same software that “organizes” your memory more efficient,…but in the end it only slowed everything down, and it used more resources too,… so,… :o
In my opinion those programs are kinda useless cause for what I know,…Windows does a good job in using the memory,… ![]()
btw, mine shows 17 MB of ram,…so I guess this is normal ![]()
Grunger, how to check the ram usage in windows???
well normally using Windows 2000-XP machines => CTRL-ALT-DEL gives you the taskmanager,…under Windows 95/98
It has been 3 years since I worked with Win9x machines,…do not remember how to get taskmanager,…don’t know if it exists in Win9x,…
Maybe you can find info on google,…
Yes I know, I have lots of processes running,…I was @ work at the time I took the screenshot,…and with 2 GB of ram I do not feel any conficts ![]()
A good thing though when you want to free up ram memory,…
And I have been working for 6 years with the same machine before I got this one, so I know what I am talking about.
No it doesn’t. You have to press CTRL+ALT+DEL command twice to restart machine. If you use it only once you’ll get Task Manager. But its very limited,so you won’t be able to check memory usage.
To see memory usage, use http://sysinternals.com/files/procexpnt.zip
It’s designed for Windows XP but works either (and fine) with 98 and Me.
I understand your message. I have noticed that when I scan with the standard scan or thorough scan it starts eating virtual memory like crazy, 1.3GB or more. Mine will not even finish scanning. It just stops and the program ends abruptly. It did not eat memory or quit when I did a quick scan though. I even went as so far to make a separate partition totally dedicated to the window pagefile. This is set to 2.3GB. I also left a 100MB pagefile on the C:. It still cannot finish a standard scan. I think I will email avast about the issue.
Running Windows XP SP2, Athalon-M 1600+, 648MB RAM.
