Ashserv (Not Responding)

I have Win98 SE, OE6 and IE6

I have the free edition of Avast 4.8 Home and very often when I try to go to Standby I get Ashserv (Not Responding). I know that the Ashserv.exe file is part of the Avast software. I have had Avast for a few years and this has not happened until recently. Any remedies please?

ashServ.exe is the antivirus engine (the resident, the scanner).
It shouldn’t have giving trouble on going to Standby… Did you have any other antivirus before avast? How did you uninstall it? Any other security program?

I previously had AVG and uninstalled that via their software because it was no longer compatible with Win98. I do not have any other anti virus programmes.

I hope Igor could take a look… I’m not an expert on Windows 98 (anymore)… can’t help that much, sorry.
