My current version of Avast is 4.6.603, and we are running Windows 2000. I think the computer is 650mhz and 128mb ram.
Basically, my computer has become extremely slow recently, and when I run Task Manager my CPU usage is more often than not at 100%. It seems the main bulk of the usage is by ashServ.exe, usually between 60-80, whenever the CPU temporarily drops for ashServ.exe the CPU usuage goes down with it, but this does not last for long. For example, today my computer has been on for about five hours, and in the CPU Time column for ashServ it reads 3:24:10, but only 0:58:15 for System. This seems awfully high to me. I have checked with a colleague who is also running Avast (Same version, on similar computer) and he doesn’t seem to have any of these problems, and the CPU usuage for ashServ.exe is tiny compared with mine.
What exactly is ashServ.exe, and do you know why it seems to be using up so much of my memory? Any assistance will be hugely appreciated.
It may also be the VRDB doing its job on the background.
Also, haven’t you, by any chance, scheduled a scan in avast? That would run inside ashServ.exe as well.
I also have noticed in the past week or so a really significant slowdown on all three workstations and not had the time to investigate until now. As it turns out its ASHSERV.exe sitting in high 90`s for extended lengths of time and ball spinning really slowly.
CPU is as below which should have plenty of grunt.
No recent installations to speak of and nothing else has been updated that is running constantly except M$ antispy maybe.
It would be nice to find out what is being scanned (when the ball is spinning, something certainly is scanned). I suggest to open the On-access protection control (by clicking on the ball) and checking the Last scanned and Scanned count of the particular resident providers (especially Standard Shield).
Sorry Igor , i took the easy way out and did a fresh install with my main system. it flies now in comparison. if it happens again with either of the others I will monitor it a little more closely before taking that option.
Strangely the repair option didnt seem to work as the repaired sign came up almost instantly and there was no change. :
I was just looking for this same problem…I am running an AMD 64 3500+ machine with over a gig of ram…I am having the same prob…it is using 90+% of the cpu to run…THIS IS NOT NORMAL…Each time i restart my machine it does the same thing…And like said before…is periodically stop and runs normal and then slowssssss down horribly…but i just checked the scan…i think i may have found a solution as i am typing…it keeps trying to scan the microsoft antispyware error.log file and when it speeds up it goes on to a different one…try deleting the log file(it is automatically recreated…)…and this dratamatically sped things up again…
Undoubtly it’s a conflict…
Do you use any other antivirus in the same system?
Did you install any other software recently? Specially firewall, proxy filter, security and startup monitor applications, etc.
