When I start a scan with Avast Home, Comodo 2.4v firewall notifies me that ashimpl.exe is trying to acess this internet. In this case it is my modem address. I’ve never noticed this before. Could it have to do with the latest Avast Home program I have? Both of my XP machines report this. No problems with either machine as far as I can see.
Does Comodo 2.4 have a log of what kind of message ashsimpl is trying to send to your modem (router?). ashsimpl.exe is the simple user interface for avast! on-demand virus scanning, and one thing it needs to do is go out and find everything that avast! might need to scan. This includes your network drives (if any) and there is a network adapter attached to your modem/router. Wonder if this is related to what the firewall is seeing?
Sded, since I ok’d ashsimpl.exe request to access the modern, I could find nothing in Comodo v2.4 log. Next scan, a one time thing, I will block its request and look for a log entry. The request was made via port 53. It does make sense for Avast to want to have a look see at the modem when it starts a scan. Gosh, maybe it has always done that and I just never noticed. I had thought maybe this started with the latest program update.
Port 53 is a DNS request for an IP associated with a URL, so don’t know how that fits. Could also be looking for an update or ?, but should be able to tell from the message. If it got the IP it should have followed with a TCP to the IP it got back somewhere along the way.
I think ashSimpl.exe would only go there if an update check was initiated from the Simple User Interface, but in theory even though initiated by ashSimpl.exe avast.setup would still do the connections ???
I just checked that doing an iAVS update from the SUI and the only entries in the firewall (Outpost Pro 2009) are for avast.setup, which is what I would have expected, with svchost outbound UDP to port 53 to OpenDNS which is my DNS server.
Thanks guys to both of your input. Will post back later If I obtain further info.
May I say in closing, the response time to a request for help on this forum is the quickest of any help forum I have ever been to.
You’re welcome, fast response is a trait of the avast forums ;D
