Problems started 1/2/06 - I use my system every day and it has been very intermittent happened about 5 times now.
My system gets slower and then ashWebSv.exe crashes - Event properties reports "Faulting application ashWebSv.exe, version 4.6.763.0, faulting module NetDog.dll, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00009343.:
(possibly contains or is related to an anti-spyware product known as ArmorWall, which is considered a rogue anti-spyware app. here - http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm )
Based on this I would be suspicious of the whole package, not least on the rogue software but the faulting element/module belongs to it and isn't the avast web shield that is failing.
I would be looking at an alternative firewall, zone alarm free is fine with avast and has a relatively friendly user interface.
I am not a big fan of Zone Alarm - Armor2-Net is one of many firewalls that I have used over the years. I really liked BlackIce a few years ago but then they sort of shafted existing users by not providing an upgrade path.
I will investigate the Armour2 issue - thanks for the tip
A lot of forum members are also using Kerio, comodo, I only mentioned ZA as I didn’t know you experience level and ZA is usually a safe bet. I used to use it years ago, then Outpost free and then Outpost pro now.
I installed Kerio on another PC about 2 months ago - the install crashed midway and I couldn’t recover. I ended up having to re-install XP - as a result I didn’t persevere with Kerio.
Hey David! - I thought I’d take your advice installed Outpost (free version version so i could get a feel for it) - I had already uninstalled other firewall and disabled virus and guess what -
2 hours later after umpteen BSODs - couldn’t get any restore points to work - couldn’t restart in safe mode - aaaarhh!
The issue needs further investigation but I guess I’ll pass on Outpost for now
The main reason I upgraded to the Pro version from the free Outpost 1.0 version is it hasn’t had any development or updates (hence the 1.0 version number). That being said I never had a problem with it. I don’t know why you would be having so many problems with multiple different firewalls, perhaps there is some underlying issue.
There has to be some other reason than the firewalls themselves. This problem appears to re-occur no matter what firewall AndrewH uses. Please read what David posted above in the Quote ( http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm ) and get rid of the NetDog.dll and any other remains of Armor2Net. Otherwise, you will continue to have problems.
Netdog.dll and the rest of armor2net had been completely removed prior to attempted install. Also my previous problem with kerio was on another PC - not equipped with Armor2Net. Finally the dreaded rogue_antispyware report actually only stated that they were guilty of over zealous reporting of spyware as an enticement to get you o buy their product - they must have read marketing 101 by Bill Gates.
My guess is that ICS may have been the problem - Outpost does say it is not designed for it - it doesn’t say this install will eat your OS.
Anyway I will simply monitor ashwebsv and run with MS firewall for the time being
