aswMBR Woes - operating system can't start. Help!

Hi all,

I am one of those silly doozies who should have checked what I was doing before I do it. But I am hoping one of you might know how to rectify this problem.

I got a cocktail of trojans in my computer. Long story short - the comp was reformatted (using HP’s disc to restore to factory) and performed ok for a day then it all started again. My own personal data has almost all been lost so I don’t know where they are still coming from.

Anyways, in my stress I ran aswMBR from Avast!, and without really meaning to - I used the fixMBR button. I presume now my boot sector code got wiped. My operating system can’t start up.

My questions are:

  • How do I get Windows up and running again?
  • Does this mean that I cannot use the factory restore option anymore? (I have a HP laptop)
  • And if so, how can I get the factory restore function back again?

I’m an idiot I know, but please help!!!

ps: let me know if I should be posting this in another forum thread.

Much thanks,
so2

Hi there, first a few questions… Before we access the computer

What is the OS… XP,Vista or 7
If Vista or 7 is it 32 or 64 bit
Can you burn a CD or do you have a spare USB of at least 1Gb

Hi there,

It is Win 7, 64-bit.
I do have a spare USB of at least 1gb. And yes I should be able to burn a CD with another computer (which is a Mac).

Much thanks again…

Hi all,

The problem has been solved.
I tried different ways of repairing the boot sector with the recovery CD from HP but is unable to get it repaired without doing a reinstallation of Windows.
So in the end I reinstalled Windows. Did lose all my programs and configurations but still only took a couple of hours to get everything back again (data is somewhere else). Still more time-saving than trying to find a command and/or function that works. And I have a peace of mind that it will remove the viruses I was battling with before.

Thanks again for all your help.
Will try not to be an idiot next time

It may be worth creating a recovery console for windows 7
