"aswRunDll.exe" crashes on startup

I got this error message saying “An exception occured (unknown software exception) (0xXXXXXXXX) in application at 0xXXXXXXXX.” with the title saying the crashed program was aswRunDll.exe.
I googled the name, and it told me the program is part of avast. One of the google results for a virus database mentioned that aswRunDll.exe is potentionally a virus, but most of the comments on that page said it is not.
Then I looked up the name on this forum, and I got a load of results, but only a few were relevant and none of them got a real answer.
I got this error yesterday too, and I just thought it was just my computer acting up again. This happens when I login, and I dont get any other messages about it after that. I only got it yesterday and today, and I dont recognize the name of the program. I often go into the task manager to terminate glitching games(most games I play are in alpha, and buggy), and I never saw the process before.
One of the relevant results in the search here got only one reply asking for a screenshot of the error. I can post one, but it is in dutch and Im not sure if it will help anyone finding the cause.
Most of the irrelevant results in the search here mentioned they were trying to install or remove avast, but I am just getting this message on startup, before I get any chance to start any program, leave alone remove one. I already have avast installed(its expiring soon btw, if thats relevant).
This error does not seem to cause anything serious, but is rather annoying. Any info on this?

Cheers

Edit: scanned the folder where aswRunDll.exe is located, no viruses found.

I got the same error message saying “unknown software exception” (0xc0000417) at location 0x71bff979 on startup after an update of the Avast! Free Antivirus software to the latest version 2014.9.0.2016.

This error suddenly disappeared after I installed the latest updates for Windows 7.

I thought this topic wouldnt get any replies, but it seems I was wrong

Id like to add to the OP that I didnt get the error anytime after that. Just 2 times in a row with no visible after effects other than an entry in my system log, and never again. But Im still curious :stuck_out_tongue: If this does have any potentionally unwanted effects then please tell me.
