I’ve seen others get help with this issue here with aswRvrt.sys hangs on startup in Safe Mode.
I have a Windows 7 64bit OS with the latest avast! (I think).
My computer recently started showing pretty apparent signs of infection (ads on every page, tabs randomly opening to a few certain pages over and over, etc), but my attempts to correct the problem weren’t successful. A friend pretty fluent in computers guessed that I most likely have malware that caused the problem.
It was running fine this morning, then I took a shower and came back and the patch I was installing for League of Legends was frozen at 99%, no pages in GChrome were responding and windows explorer/networking options were freezing.
After I tried restarting it I was stuck. Booting in safe mode results in the aswRvrt.sys hangups that others are having, and booting normally leaves it at the “Starting Windows” shining icon for several minutes, then it’s black and I can briefly see my cursor, then that disappears. If I move my cursor it appears for a bit but it’s like the brightness is dimmed, and then it disappears and the screen stays black, indefinitely as far as I can tell. I can get to advanced boot options, all the safemode/other options, and I can get to a list of System Options. System Restore does nothing for my issue as far as I can tell.
I downloaded FRST from bleepingcomputer and successfully ran it. Attached the .txt.
The best that I can tell from reading around is that I need to get a fixlist so I can start up in safemode at least and then use Malwarebytes, which I already have, to remove the Malware if it can be found.
Any help would be appreciated, I have an exam opening online tonight at 6pm and I have a lot of other things I need my laptop for related to college, and it’s the only computer in my apartment. Thanks.
It spent a lot of time at “Starting Windows” and then took me through login welcome screen to my “desktop” which is just a grey screen with my freely moving cursor. I can’t seem to access anything except I was able to alt-ctrl-del and get the task manager up.
Started it over again booted normally and my taskbar came up. Although everything is slow. My wallpaper is up as well. Waiting to see if I can do anything with it soon.
Some other things are reacting no sooner than ten minutes later but I’ve waited about 40 minutes for Malwarebytes and no luck. Not sure what to do now.
[*]Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
[*]When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
[*]Attach both logs
Thank you for your response. I just got on campus but when I’m home to my apartment in 5-6 hours I’ll try what you posted.
I left my computer up in normal mode and by the time I got up it was running smoothly and the internet was working but I only had time to check on it for less than a minute and I’m sure if I tried too much it’d get bogged down again but unfortunately I still can’t get it in safe mode.
I’ll post when I get results later on. Thanks again.
Here’s the logs. Laptop let me download it directly for the mean time. Makes this process much more convenient since I only have this one PC in the apartment.

[Reboot]
[*]Then click the Run Fix button at the top
[*]Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
[*]Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.
[]Right-mouse click JRT.exe and select “Run as Administrator” the tool will open and start scanning your system
[]please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system’s specifications
[]On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
[]post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.
Took the steps you said. When it automatically rebooted after the first step, it started up to the desktop much faster, and the desktop was faster, too but started up a little differently than it used to, as in it took longer for my start bar/etc to come up. Just a wallpaper-less screen for a while. Definitely an improvement though. No abnormal lag when I started trying to do things.
I didn’t reboot after I did the last part with JRT, should I?
Came up with a warning about my hard disk failing and recommended I back up and replace it. Gonna back that up now and buy a new harddrive in a couple of hours unless you have other ideas for me to try first.
Total Files Cleaned = 426.00 mb this was the reason for the long boot after OTL as it was clearing your temp files. Replace the hard drive and then clone the system over (or go for a fresh install) Once done let me know of any further problems
