Hi, I have read other threads on this error but don’t fully understand how to sort this out.
I am on Vista 32 bit and cannot boot normally nor in Safe mode because it says ‘Windows failed to load because a critical system driver is missing, or corrupt’
Status: 0xc0000098.
Last thing I did was try to update Avast and this message has been happening since rebooting.
Recovery Cd cannot fix this, I have no restore points - any help appreciated. Thanks

Scroll down to “If you cannot Boot the computer” and follow the instructions.
Thanks but link leads to the forum but not a specific topic. :o
Try this https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0
and scroll down to If you cannot Boot the computer
Hi guys, sorry for the delay but I had to get access to another laptop to burn the cd from the link.
Attached is the FRST txt.
Thanks
Download the attached fixlist to the same location as FRST
Run FRST as before and press fix
On completion try a normal boot
Hi, I ran the fix and rebooted and it boots and shows ‘windows failed to start’ and I chose safe mode, normal mode and with both it shows the vista loading bar then a blue screen flashes then reboots back to the screen which says ‘windows failed to start’
The error refers to a BCD configuration error
Avast has been removed so that is not the source of the problem
Do you have your Vista CD
Thanks for the help mate - I do and am fed up of vista so am now looking to upgrade to win 7. The vista cd I have will only reinstall vista after a full wipe as no option to repair and I have no restore points. Have now bought a win 7 key for £15 just need it to be sent to me.
I hope you have checked first if your system can handle Windows 7.
