aswVmm.sys is corrupt- Windows 7 will not boot

I tried updating Avast earlier today and got a BSOD. Then after rebooting, my computer is now stuck in Windows System Recovery.
I tried booting into Safe Mode and restoring from a good configuration but those also failed.

Looking at other entries in the forum, it looks like I need to uninstall Avast and re-install it. But not sure what my best options to do that are.

I have Windows 7 64 bit, Professional. I currently do not have a CD for it, but I’m pretty sure one of my friends has a copy. I also have access to a working computer.

Thanks in Advance.

Are you able to access command prompt from the safe mode menu

I can get to the Command Prompt through the advanced options in System Recovery Mode.

Can’t boot in safe mode though.

OK download the following to a USB drive and then insert the drive into the poorly machine
Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64

At the command prompt type the following :

notepad and press Enter.
The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
Select “Computer” and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
In the command window type e:\frst64.exe and press Enter
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
The tool will start to run.
When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.

Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

OK. Followed the steps. Attached the log.

You will need to repair Avast on completion of this

Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Run FRST as before and press fix
On completion reboot to normal windows

Ran the Fix. Computer is now booted in Normal mode. I’m assuming this procedure uninstalled Avast from my computer? Should i re-install it or will that cause the same problem?

The files are still on there I just removed the service keys. My recommendation would be a full uninstall followed by a fresh install to ensure that the file is not corrupted

Lets reinstall Avast

Download Uninstall Utility to your Desktop.
Download the correct version of Avast
Avast Free
Avast Pro
Avast Internet Security
Avast Premier
Disconnect from the net
Uninstall Avast via control panel

[]Run aswClear
[
]It will offer to reboot to safe mode … no need to do that

[*]In the Select Product to Uninstall dropdown choose the version of Avast that is on your system.
[*]Press Uninstall
[*]Once complete reboot your system to Normal Mode
[*]Reinstall Avast

Got Avast Uninstalled and re-installed. Everything looks like it’s running good. Thanks for the help essexboy.

Just for Future reference, would it be safer to uninstall and re-install for the next update?

I usually do that for a version change i.e 7 to 8 and 8 to 2014
But for minor changes I just do it over the top
