I have 7.0.1456 installed but avast constantly tells me I’m out-of-date and need to update. Every time I try the avast update process CRASHES always trying to download vps_32-846-845.vpx. Did this even with the Firewall disabled. Nothing else is giving me any problems.
I reported this 11 days ago and so far nothing. I am within a day or two of trashing avast and going elsewhere.
I am sorry no one responded to you until now. Perhaps I can help you.
Did you have this problem with the previous version of Avast or just this one? If it was with the current version, did you upgrade to this version or do uninstall and do a clean install?
What other AV’s have you had on this machine in the past and how did you remove it? (Vendor’s uninstaller tool or another way)?
What do you use for a firewall? Did you try deleting Avast from your firewall and letting it re-establish itself to see if this fixes the problem?
What other security software do you have on the machine?
What is your OS, SP_?
How do you connect to the Internet?
Have you tried an Avast Repair: XP Users:
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > Avast Antivirus.
Scroll down and choose Repair function in the pop-up window.
Reboot.
Vista & Win7 Users:
Control Panel
Programs & Features
Uninstall a Program > Select Avast Antivirus
Click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair
Click Next and follow.
Reboot.
In your next post with the answers to the questions above, let us know if the Avast Repair resolved your problem. Thank you.
Thanks for the response. 50 years in operating system & application development.
I suspect an Avast install failed and has created the problem. I attempted an Avast Repair and got the error message attached (.jpg): “Error processing packages. Please use full update”, whatever the latter means. I have also attached the Avast log which was created.
There is no other AV package running (AVG was long ago ripped out, as was a Sophos trial) and only the Windows Firewall is used. Install failed even with it turned off. I am logged in as a user with Admin privileges. Had been using Avast for several years until about 6 months ago when it was causing the Blue Screen of Death. Isolated it as the culprit and uninstalled it in Safe Mode and then all was well. Reinstalled a later release some time later and it has been running well until this update. 7.0.1456 “appears” to have been installed per the program’s “Current Version” but it keeps trying to update, nonetheless. Every time I let it try it chokes in the middle of downloading vps_32-846-845.vpx file – always that file. Permanently attached to the Internet with high-speed broadband (Comcast business account). Running Win XP Pro, SP3. It’s a program development system.
At this point it looks like I have to remove Avast and totally re-install it from scratch, but I’ll await your advice. Will even clean out any remnants in the Registry.

Before you go down the clean reinstall route, try this:
Manual update of VPS - avast! Virus Definitions Update - Manual Download VPS Update (virus definitions, vpsupd.exe, approx 58.7 MB). - Save the file to your hard disk, locate where you saved it and double click it and that should carry out the virus definitions update.
Note: Ignore the file name in the example images of the page that is displayed after clicking the download link, they are for the main program, not for vpsupd.exe which will be downloaded.
