ATTENTION TO ALL beware of these little nasties

hi all my name is henry and this is my first time here
and i look forward to reading all topics here.

i had a problem (solved now) ;D ;D ;D

i just downloaded called Kazaa LimeWire Companion 3.02.19
not sure if anyone here has already try-ed to use it.

i started to install this program and avast went off it’s head!
here is a list of the nasties inside the program :o

the report below is from XOFTSPY latest version

ScanningRegKeys>

</Session

i also tryed another program called “Acez Jukebox 1.0”
it also made avast have a break down lol

it contains a few trojans

all i did was delete them while installing and the program is working fine.

last thing has anyone looked at “keyloggers” for monitoring people on your PC?

i have tryed a few and avast also found them out this is just one of them that i tryed “Personal Inspector v4.60”

also i have ZONE ALARM and it also alerts me what these programs try to get up to! ??? ??? >:(

any comments most welcome

all the best
henry…

Beware the programs you use to scan your system for issues, some are rogue_antispyware programs.

My first port of call is http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm#xos_note and search for XOFTSPY, it used to be listed as a rogue program but has been de-listed, how much store you put in that is up to you.

There are many freeware anti-spyware programs out there and I suggest you look at the smaller list of trusted apps http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm#trustworthy

thanks for that i will look that site up.

the only reason i put xoftspy report up here was quick and simple to do at the time.
i must say avast is tops as it alerted me before anything else did.

all i can say about xoftspy is it has been reliable for along time and i also use zone alarm to scan for these, and compair adaware se also to see if it is a legit problem.
in this case it was all true.

thanks again DavidR

 Assuming you have Win XP, the best FREE program to
check for the presence of keyloggers is most likely “Ewido”
available from www.ewido.net .
Exactly HOW did you solve your Kazaa LimeWire Companion
“problem” ?
Since you seem to download programs you have NOT
throughly investigated before doing so, perhaps you should
install “RootkitRevealer” from :
www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/rootkitrevealer.html
to see if there are any hidden rootkits in your machine !?

DavidR is exaclty right about doing the research before you download.

You might want to consider including the following criteria in your pre-download reasearch:

  1. Download only from known, respected sites
  2. Look for sites that show the number of downloads and user ratings
  3. Download only those programs that have been used and are given positive reviews by an acceptable number of users (you will have to set your own acceptability limit here).

My feeling is that if, for example, 10,000+ users have downloaded a program, most reviewers like it, and none are reporting it as malware its probably safe. Of course, I might be missing some very good software with this approach but if a program is good enough it will eventually reach my threshold.

One sight that lets me look at all these criteria is http://fileforum.betanews.com/

I’m sure there are others as well.

Merry Christmas wishes to all.

Hi mauserme,

You can also check against spywareguide. Visit the site and check the name against their scum- and rogueware list. If you find it there stay a thousand miles from it, because it is bad for you and for your computer as such.

polonus

polonus,

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve added spyware guide to my favorites.

The only shortcoming I noted is Avast is not in the antivirus shopping list …
