I’ve upgraded to Avast 5 (from 4.8) and I’m getting the same problem over and over : audio playing is choppy with every application. This happen with WinAmp, media Player or even audio file editor Sound Forge… Audio starts, then stops for quite a second, then continue, then stops again few seconds after, and so on…
The only solution I’ve found is to temporarily disable all Avast agents.
It’s very annoying, and I would like to know if somebody have found a solution before downgrading to 4.8
Solution? Unfortunately no. The cause? Yes. It’s caused by high DPC latency spikes caused by avast. You won’t be able to avoid a downgrade until developers release a version with fixed driver(s).
Well, my audio is not choppy at all, and I don't have those spikes.
Looks like you either:
1. Not using windows xp
2. Don't have high uptimes (days and weeks)
DPC latency problems occur only on WinXP and after certain period of uptime (50 hours should be enough for the problem to become noticable).
Well there’s the rub.
I’m running XP SP3 and Avast 5.0.462
I have moderate uptimes (24 to 48 hours)
I don’t have any indication at all of DPC latency problems (using Syscon DPC latency checker).
I don’t have any chopping in audio or video, and this PC sees many hours of use on most days with video/audio editing and rendering.
So whilst I have seen the DPC graphs of those experiencing this problem, it isn’t occurring across the board with XP, and in the case of the OP, Aboulafia could perhaps determine if DPC latency has anything to do with his particular problem by rebooting every 4 hours or so. All the reports of DPC problems seem to involve very high uptimes.
For the record, I run with the File Shield, Mail Shield, Web Shield and Network Shield. I specifically don’t have the other shields installed, perhaps something else Aboulafia could try.
well, I have the same problem.
You can do is use the version 4.8 or disable the shields one by one to find out what is causing the problem.
You can not do its expect they (ALWIL) will fix this so soon.
I think this issue of DPC is associated with the P2P shield.

If you want any meaningful response to your request, you need to take the time to provide some worthwhile information, like what operating system you have (XP, Vista, windows 7, whether it is 32 bit or 64 bit, what type of CPU your PC has, the speed, and how much memory. It also helps to indicate what other security software you are running and whether it is on demand or real time, what firewall you use etc. The more information you give, the better chance of getting a satisfactory answer.
Did anything unusual occur at around that time, did you uninstall or install any new or different software of any kind. Exactly what version of Avast is currently installed?
And why is that - If it is not simply that you can’t open the CD drive door, perhaps you need to say clearly what happens when you try to play an audio CD, and also what you are playing it with (Windows Media player 9, 10 11 ?, VLC media player or other)
OK - Take your point - first time I have used the forum.
Nothing odd has happened with Avast. Originally installed a year ago and no problems. Not un/installing any other software at the time. Problems identified only occured at the time when the Avast voice changed from female to male - problems started at that point.
Problem related to CD is nothing to do with CD drive. It is that, when I play a CD, the voice of the singer is that of the Avast ‘person’. Same problem when I view YouTube clips. Anything I play that contains audio is played with the voice of the Avast person, not the original audio voice.
