was wondering why, since v5, the program frequently disables itself and has to be manually reenabled…
(am under win7)

dear Igor,
this post doesn’t help much. I am also on Win 7 64 (not XP), Avast 5 great for 1 month, now autodisconnect and doesn’t reconnect anymore.
De-install, re-install, doesn’t work.
What happened?
That post says that we’d need those unp* files - they could tell us what is happening.
don’t have any of these unp files - have a bunch of log files if you’re interested…
Please try the following:
-
open Control Panel
-
use the box in the top-right corner to search for “problem”
-
select “View all problem reports” from the results
(sorry, don’t know how to click through to that item in the ordinary way) -
Find avast! service and expand the list - is there any recent “Not reported” problem available?
If yes, rightclick on it, select “View technical details”.
In the following window, is there a section “Files that help describe the problem”, together with a link “View a temporary copy of these files”?
best way in Seven is to either view reliability history (just type reliability in the main menu search box or control panel) or/and generate a system health report…you’ll find it there>>>
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Performance Information and Tools\Advanced Tools
this said, I’ve had one issue with the firewall module eating 50% CPU (just one time recently)…and that’s it. Avast is running constantly reboot after reboot.
there is no avast-related problem in either problem report or reliability history…
so there must be something else, something wrong going on on your Windows setup. You can troubleshoot that…if nothing related to Avast was mentioned in reliability history, did you notice anything else ? (with a small red cross)
sure there are red crosses, but none related to avast, and the topic here is avast… never mind, the disconnection is not that frequent, i’ll keep reconnecting…
oh I didn’t notice what the topic was : ;D >>> other critical events might give a clue to what goes wrong on your system causing Avast to be unstable. Avast isn’t running in an isolated environment: it’s running in Windows ok?
@ jmm
Have you checked Event Viewer for any errors with Windows?
…
I found one of these files. Please let me know where to send since I cannot attache it here.
FYI, my bet is that there is a conflict between Avast5 and Outlook (Outlook Connector to be more specific).
Effectively, last Friday all my e-mail account settings disapeared and outlook started from scratch. I had to re-create all my e-mail accounts.
I only noted the redcross on Avast begining of this week (something to improve in alert messages guys?).
Yesterday I painfully managed to reinstall Avast5, running perfectly, without redcross.
But all my e-mail accounts disappeared again…I recreated them but didn’t succeed for those managed by Outlook connector.
Tonight, when back home, I will un- and re-install Outlook connector, and wonder if I will see a red cross again…
Will let you know
PS: I run Win7 64, Outlook 2010 Beta, latest Avast5
here’s the error code in event viewer:
- 7034 0 2 0 0 0x8080000000000000 300424 System "name of my PC"
- avast! Antivirus 1
i must add that avast logs out mostly when going on internet (firefox in my case)
cheers - jm

Is your date and time correct on your PC? Avast should not be turning itself off when you go on FF.
yep, time and date ok… avast doesnt turn off every time i use ff but when it does it’s mostly when using ff…
in fact it seems that a number of users here have encountered this problem since v5, so there seems to be a real bug somewhere in the software…
@ jmm
I only use FF and Avast never turns itself off. I think what you’ve been reading in the forum is that some people have had an issue with Avast disabling itself regardless of what browser they use and that’s when they are seeing the red “X” on top of the orange ball in the bottom tool bar. Is this what you are seeing while in FF when the problem occurs?
What build of FF are you using, and are you having problems with any other browser while Avast is enabled?
Are you just surfing in FF or doing specific things like trying to DL when this happens? Do you have any software, like a firewall, where you are using FF in a Safe Mode that might be causing an issue?
