XP PRO SP3… had to reinstall windows and start from scratch when my hard drive went bye bye and main backup too. Had 6.0.1125 setup on a flash drive, so installed it with automatic update for engine and definitions and for program, ask when an update is available. The next day when I checked, Avast had decided to update me to 6.0.1367. I have since changed the setting to manual update only for program. Is this a known problem?

Not for me, mine is set to ask, and it asked me multiple times over 2 days and reboots before I got around to updating.
No problems here either, don’t know why you would have gotten a program update automatically if you had that set to ask.
The default settings, auto for defs and ask for program updates, are probably the most practical since the latter are much bigger and frequently require a reboot and you’ll probably want to hold off till a more convenient time. If I get that popup notification of a program, I’ll make a mental note to check for updates later – or, of course, there’s that view-latest-popup feature, assuming there hasn’t also been a defs update in the meantime. That “update now” link still works if you’re viewing last popup, by the way.
