Auto Update Errors

I keep getting error messages when the computer boots up. I tried the delay, removed and reinstalled but the problem persists. Says Avast can’t find specifed file. Which file I don’t know. Using Windows Xp with Comodo firewall. I disabled firewall and rebooted and the error message still arrives.

What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number?
Can you post a screenshot of the error message?
To know how to post a screenshot, see http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=8982.0
You can use Gadwin PrintScreen to get a screenshot (http://www.gadwin.com/printscreen/) or the free version of WinSnap 1.1.10 (http://www.filehippo.com/download_winsnap/?2173).

What is the full text of the error, I assume it includes the missing file name and location (or post a screenshot as suggested by Tech) ?

Alan peers into his crystal ball and predicts this is another case where the specified file that cannot be found is in the Windows system defined temporary directory.

Nothing wrong with anything - except that avast cannot write to the the Windows system defined temporary directory.

I’d say it’s more about some of the setup (updater) files missing.

Could you please try the “repair” function?
Control Panel → Add/Remove Programs → avast! Antivirus → Change/Remove → Repair (scroll the list on the left to see that option).

Thanks
Vlk

I did use the repair, didn’t work. I uninstalled using the Avast ashclear tool, downloaded and installed the latest version. Still errors. You can manually update just fine.
This is why I thought it was the firewall was effecting it somehow on boot. I have been using Avast and Comodo for ages with no problem and then last week this all started.

Please post the last part of the file avast\setup\setup.log (the section with the File not found error in it).

Thanks
Vlk

I am having a similar problem. My exact error message is:

ashAvast.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point DSA-FileVerify could not be located in the dynamic link library aswCmnS.dll

I am running Windows XP version 5.1.2600.
My internet browser is Firefox version 2.0.0.3

Since Avast tried to update, it will no longer start automatically on a reboot, nor can I start it manually. The Outlook add-in will not start also.

RegentAlum, your problem seems to be unrelated.
Can you please check that there’s only one instance of the aswCmnS.dll file on your computer (do a search on all local drives) - it should be in the avast folder.

If there’s only one copy, try doing a “repair” of avast installation.
Control Panel → Add/Remove Programs → avast! Antivirus → Change/Remove → Repair.

Thanks
Vlk

This log seems ok to me… although I’m not an expert on log reading…
Maybe the automatic update is working, you just aren’t seeing the update panel?
