automatic update fails 4.6

WinXP - auto update gets the red-box message that update failed. Log doesnt help.
Then tried manual update and get message “Program already up to date 4.6.665”
and “VPS already up to date 0521-5”.
The little avast control screen shows current version 0521-4 05/27/05
Isn’t this inconsistent? (0521-4 or 0521-5).
Am I really up-to-date? Why the update error messages?

the latest avast! updates for 4.6 is 0521-5.

What is your OS? (Mac,Windows XP, 98, 2000, etc.)

Do you have a firewall? If so, what is it?

What internet connection are you using? (Dial-up, Satellite, DSL, Cable, etc.)

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, avast! Anti-Virus, Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.
If that doesn’t work try, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.

Thanks for the replies.
Firewall is the one included in Windows XP (WinXP). Using dialup.
As suggested I did the “repair” .
The “little avast control screen” now shows current version 0522-0 05/30/05
Perhaps this is solved - will let you know when next auto update comes in.

Your using Dail-up? How about this:

Run avast!
Go to meu
Click settings
Go to Update (Connection)
Check mark “I only connect to the internet using a dail-up modem”
click okay.

I tried this today as suggested:

Same result when auto update attempted. Then tried manual update and result is that I’m already up-to-date.

Try to also go to Update (Basic) and make a mark on “Manual” for both Virus Database and program so that avast! won’t find update right alway.

Sometimes, starting 2/3 weeks ago, I also get this kind of error. The repair solve the problem.
I have avast on 2 computors but this only happens in one of them.
Both with XP, broadcable connection through a router, Windows firewall and no check marks on update settings.

Turned off automatic update.
Manually updated ok.
Turned auto back on.
Error message again on next auto update.
Did the repair again.
Error message again on next auto update
When I try a second manual update immediately after another manual update, I get message that system is up-to-date.
So MAYBE everything is ok except that the auto update doesnt work?
