Automatic update problem

Hi, I hope someone can help me. I can’t seem to recieve the automatic virus database updates. My “Current Version of Virus Database” says 26/03/05. Automatuc updates is switched on and I have checked all the settings which all look correct. I had a virus last night…or a few, I’m not sure. Avast warned me of them (soon found out it was from visiting a certain website…just a band website) so I followed all instructions and eventually it went away. BTW, it was the dialer virus that dials up international numbers or something. Anyway, since last night I have run the virus scan and it is clear. I have also run Adaware and Spybot and these found hundreds of spyware (not sure if caused by the virus cos I haven’t run scans in a while). So far all seems to be ok apart from a few pop-ups that I have now got rid of.

But I am now concerned that I am not getting the relevant virus updates. Currently, I am downloading the updates via the website. Is there anything I can do within Avast’s settings to bring the updates back (it does say that Automatic updates are on). My boyfriend has Avast on his computer and everytime he is online for a few minutes, it says “Virus database has been updated”. I don’t get this for some reason.

Thanks in advance!

Two possibilities to check:

  1. Into the firewall settings, the following programs should be allowed to connect:
    ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service)
ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner) (allow server rights)
ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service) (allow email rights)
    ashUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)
    avast.setup (avast! Update executable)

Which firewall do you use? Speciall the bold one must be allowed.

  1. Make sure your browser is not set to “Work Offline” (this option is generally in the File menu). If it doesn’t help, try switching the proxy settings from “Auto-detect” to “No proxy” (I’m assuming you’re not connecting to the Internet via proxy).
Left click the avast icon > Settings > Update (Basic) > Details > Proxy
