Automatic update problem

Please forgive my bad english! I have Avast Home 4.8 on my Windows XP PC (with Comodo Firewall). Since a month or so I found problems with automatic updates of antivirus: they don’t function! Manual update is working well. I checked options of program and automatic updated is set every 240 minutes. Can anybody help me? Thanks!

Hi, welcome to the forum. Does this file avast.setup have internet access in comodo?

Full file path C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\setup\avast.setup

If the manual update works then it isn’t the firewall blocking avast.setup or that wouldn’t work.

It may be that avast is getting started and finds a connection available and tries to check for updates, if comodo isn’t full up and running it blocks outbound connection for everything.

  • Comodo config options. Advanced Attack Detection and Prevention. - To get there, open program, click Security", “advanced attack detection and prevention”, and click “configure,” Block all outgoing connections while booting.

So this may be what is happening, but there really is insufficient information to say exactly what the cause is.

What is the full error message you get from the auto update failure ?

Does this happen very close to your boot, e.g. it hasn’t fully completed or shortly after it completes ?

Hi DavidR

You may be right. The little experience I have with comodo,(just long enough to set it up), I found comodo uses the parent/child. avast.setup’s parent is seen as ashdisp.exe for manual updates and aswupdsv for auto.

Whist the parentage might be one thing the child wouldn’t have changed so it would be that which is the issue, perhaps it is anti-leak stuff with the parent application as you mention.

As far as experience with comodo goes yours is far superior (so thanks for the info) as I have never touched it at all, it is only the info gleaned from these forums that alerted me to this blocking function (I don’t know if it is by default) before comodo firewall is fully up and running.

Please, post the last 200-250 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log

Thank a lot for your kind help. I really don’t understand what’s happening, but this evening, for the first time since many weeks, automatic update started and completed correctly. Now I am going to see what will happen in the future.

Well, if it happens again, try what I’ve said before on reply #5.
