My first post so if I miss anything, please tell me.
I have just installed avast 4.8 on an XP SP3 base. Auto updates fail randomly - always with the same error about access (code 5). A subsequent manual update sometimes works. I would include log entries but I can not find the update log. Can anyone suggest how to find the update log and perhaps what to look for?

Setup and update log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\setup.log
Error 5 is access denied. Any firewall being used? Other antivirus or security software?
Managed to get a manual update to fail and thus was able to capture the log. See below. Not sure where this is logged in the setup log - I could not find it. Re firewalls, I use Zone Alarm. Re other anti virus I don’t have any other real time applications enabled.

Full error log attached - perhaps someone can suggest a fix.
Did you try closing out of everything and rebooting? If auto update still fails, try to run the Repair Diagnostic. Go to Add/Remove programs in Control Panel, than find Avast. Click Remove, but this will NOT uninstall it. It will give a list of choices. Scroll down until you see Repair. Missing or damaged files will be repaired and auto update should be working after that.

Problem closed. I deleted (with some work) 4.8 and installed v5. All seems well so far.
