I have been using Avast for a couple of months on a Dial Up connection and it has been fine - with the pop up indicating that new virus info has been received. However, I have just changed to broadband and since then I have not received any Updates automatically - although I can update the Virus list manually by clicking on Update Now.
I have tried both leaving the Tick beside “Using Dial Up” and “My PC is always connected” and neither makes any difference! Although my connection is always on, I do switch the actual PC off when not in use - could that have any effect? Does anyone have any suggestions - I don’t want to have to rely on remembering to Update manually. Thanks
avast checks if there is an available connection each 40 seconds.
If there isn’t, wait more 40 seconds to check. Checking does not take more than one second and, of course, does not use the Internet band.
If there is a connection, check for an update. If there is not any new file to download, wait 4 hours to start checking again. If there is an available update, start it and install it. Again, wait 4 hours to check the next time.
Some of this settings could be configurated different, I posted the default values of the avast4.ini file.
So, the options for “dial-up” and “my connection is always on” just say to avast how to ‘ping’ the update servers and won’t affect the possibility of update.
Are you sure that the manual update is working? If so, why are you thinking the automatic is not working?
I’ll suggest that you leave the option “my connection is always on” checked and “dial-up” unchecked 
The reason I think the Automatic update is not working is that the Definition shown on my program screen was dated 10 Oct and there have definitely been updates since then. When I Manually caused the Virus definitions to update, a small file downloaded and gave me a new date and also new reference code. I have tried having a tick in each of the boxes - Always On and also Dial Up and neither seemed to make any difference. I would be sorry to have to change Virus Checker because up until now I’ve been really happy with Avast - but I don’t want to miss any important Definitions if I forget to manually do an Update. Any help would be very welcome!
You should have only “Always On” checked, and “Dial-up” must be unchecked.
Also if you have ADSL connection, you can try pressing Proxy button in Update (connection) settings, and select Direct connection.

The file is not there by default - it appears only when an update (check) is about to launch, and disappears again afterwards.

please see this post - I would suggest that you try delaying the automatic update by modifying the avast4.ini file proposed there.

- Can you can try to download the servers.def file here? http://files.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def
- Replace the one in the avast setup folder (C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\servers.def)
- Try to update again
Just to clarify,before I start modifying files…I should go to the link that you provided…I can “save as” the file…then take that file and replace it with the one currently in C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup…is that right?
