automatic updates not working

every time avast 4.7 home tries to update an error message saying “cannot access server” appears.
What should I do?

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow access to avast.setup ?

Have you tried a manual update, does that work ?

mcAfee.

It is not blocking this site, so the firewall is not the problem.

Blocking this site has nothing to do with getting updates, the updates don’t require your browser just that there is a connection. Check application/program control permissions and ensure avast.setup isn’t blocked.

I check McAfee. None of the 3 Avast items blocked.
still will not update automatically. It has to be done manually.
should i uninstall Avast?

Which 3? There should be ashmaisv.exe, ashwebsv,exe, and avast.setup

Yes, all three of them show “automatic”.

I confused what you are looking at with the “automatic” reference in a firewall program control I usually associate this with Allowed or Trusted or Blocked.

Delete the entry for avast.setup in McAfee application/program control and do an avast manual update this will force the McAfee firewall to ask again.

Is this just McAfee firewall or part of a suite that includes McAfee antivirus ?

Sorry i misstated. I meant “allow full access”.

There is no avast.setup in McAfee application/program control.
This is merely McAfee Personal Firewall Express.

Please list the 3 you have?

Did you try a manual update? What happened?

Now something new. The blue “a” icon on my windows xp taskbar, in the lower right corner, near the clock has a red and white marks on it, evidently telling me that it is not functioning.

As I said earlier, I can update manually.
This development of not being able to upgrade automatically occurred immediately or soon after the my registration number was renewed.

I deleted (or deactivated) McAfee in favor of AOL firewall, but it did not help the Avast delemna.

You could try a repair through add/remove programs. In add/remove, highligh avast, click remove, scroll down to repair. You have to be on line to do this.

But first, did you post what av you were using before and how it was uninstalled?

repair and reboot did not work.
Here is error message when atemptng to automatically update…
"Information about current update:
