Automatic updating

I am using the 4.6 Home Edition and up until three weeks ago a message used to rise up from the bottom of the screen stating an update was being installed. I no longer have that happening. I didn’t reconfigure any of my settings in Avast that I am aware of. Appreciate any help that one may choose to offer. Thanks,

On occasion when the programs elements such as Web Shield or Internet Mail providers change your firewall (what is it?) should notice this and check if it is ok to allow access to the internet. Also included in the update process is avast.setup (which can also change) needs to be allowed access, check your firewall allows access to avast.setup.

If it does allow access, then I would suggest that you try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, avast! Anti-Virus, Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.
If that doesn’t work try, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.

DavidR;

Thanks for responding. My firewall is Sygate Personal, and it does allow access for avast! antivirus service and avast! e-Mail Scanner. I see no indication of avast.setup. I did the Repair, and will wait a while to see if any improvement takes place. If I do not get the automatic updating ad, I will follow your suggestion for uninstall, reboot, install, reboot. Do you feel that avast.setup not showing in my firewall applications allowed poses a problem? Thanks,

avast.setup is a temporary file created to update avast.
It should ‘appear’ on the applications settings of the firewall in order to update avast.
But the absence of the update panel could be due to changes in avast4.ini file.
Click on ‘Settings’ in my signature and see this options there.

Do you feel that avast.setup not showing in my firewall applications allowed poses a problem? Thanks,
Yes, if it can't connect, it can't update. There should also be an entry for aswUpdSv.exe.

Try a manual update, sygate should ask permission, allow it and ask for it to be remembered. This may pop-up periodically since the element thet it remembers can also change so permission will be asked again, take care to read the sygate pop-up.

Attempting to update manually shows Avast is current. Sygate does not ask permission. Thanks,

Uninstalled and reinstalled, and now have avast! antivirus service, avast! e-Mail Scanner and avast! Web Scanner listed in my allowed Sygate firewall applications. Still no mention of avast.setup. So needless to say I am not getting the automatic update alert. Thanks,

avast.setup should be there… Can you manually update? If you disable Sygate, will you update?
The automatic update alert is a setting of avast4.ini file (please, check ‘Settings’ in my signature and compare with your system).

Add section:

[AAVM]
SuppressUpdatedInfo=0

Technical;

Did as you suggested, and added section [AAVM]
SuppressUpdatedInfo=0 to my avast4.ini file.

No change as yet as far as automatic updating, and still only have the three listings avast! antivirus service, avast! e-Mail Scanner and avast! Web Scanner, showing in my allowed Sygate firewall applications. Still no mention of avast.setup. Thanks,

Did you invoke manual updating of the program?
What happens?

Yes, and there doesn’t seem to be a problem in that respect.

  • Program: Already up to date
    (current version 4.6.623)
  • Vps: Already up to date
    (current version 0514-3)

So, how does Sygate allow it to do without asking?
Maybe a problem in your Sygate installation, maybe in Sygate itself…
Are you sure avast.setup was not shown in the application list allowed to connect?

To whom it may concern. I removed everything mentioning Avast from my Sygate applications area. Un-installed and re-installed Avast (again). Seems to have gone well, as the avast.setup entry is now showing in Sygate, along with the other three in question. Don’t know if the automatic updating is indeed working as yet, but I feel I am heading in the right direction. Appreciate all the help that was offered. Thank you all.

For sure, a Sygate problem (not alerting the program trying to update) and not avast.
Anyway, glad that you succeed 8)

avast checks if there is an available connection each 40 seconds.
If there isn’t, wait more 40 seconds to check. Checking does not take more than one second and, of course, does not use the Internet band.
If there is a connection, check for an update. If there is not any new file to download, wait 4 hours to start checking again. If there is an available update, start it and install it. Again, wait 4 hours to check the next time.

But for the program update, there is a schedule on the server to update all the avast! installations in a week period (if I’m not wrong).
With the current number of avast! users they wouldn’t be able to supply such a bandwidth (about 2Mb of program updates) in such a short time. Distributing the update evenly over a longer time period will help us mitigate the server load (and provide smoother update to everyone).
The updates are incremental. This is the wiser method of updating I have ever seen in a antivirus :wink:

You can perform a manual update anytime 8)
