This year, avast! showed big improvements in its detection rates (esp. in the second half of 2009) and reduced its number of false alarms. Its on-demand scanning speed is one of the fastest. The recently released avast! v5 includes further enhancements (like a new graphical user interface) and new protection features. Avast also offers a free version of its product to home users.
I think Avast! should have won more than just bronze on scanning speed. I bet Symantec paid the tester off, jk. The only thing I give Symantec is their GUI is really cool, I care about junk like that. Microsoft seems pretty good and maybe worth trying, but do they have a boot-time scan?
Also, kudos to Avast! on improving so much from earlier this year!
Also again, I noticed on the most recent tests they were using Avast! 5.0 Free. Is that they beta or do they have access to some sort of final product?
Wow! AVG the perennial king of Free Downloads didn’t do very well. It didn’t get a single Advanced + rating in any category.
Anyway … Question:
Okay, they state on there how Anti-Viruses have to be really Top Notch in order for them to be included in the annual AV-Comparatives Tests.
So … say — Dr. Web CureIt
Is it NOT on AV-Comparatives because it is NOT Top Notch?
Or is it that it is in another category because of it being that you have to download it AGAIN every time you use it to have the latest Malware Definitions? And that it doesn’t have Real Time protection?
From what little I’ve read, I would THINK that Dr. Web CureIt would be hands down better than KingSoft. So what’s the deal? Does Dr. Web CureIt suck THAT much that it wouldn’t be included in AV-Comparatives?
I’ve been tempted to try Dr. Web CureIt. You know … just as a periodic Manual Scan part of my layered protection that currently includes avast, SAS and MBAM.
Chim posted I’ve been tempted to try Dr. Web CureIt. You know … just as a periodic Manual Scan part of my layered protection that currently includes avast, SAS and MBAM. well i hope you have plenty of time on your hands cause Dr Web Cureit was slow on my system and i have very little installed on my pc and its dual core with 4gb of memory so be prepared. maybe go away for the weekend come home read the mail it may be done scanning by then ;). but it is effective on the other hand
WwwwwwWHOA! It was slow on your system with Dual Core and 4 Gig of RAM? ZOITS!
Then I’d better NOT even try it. As you can see in my signature, I have an old HP Pavilion with a 500-something MegaHz Celeron and only 256 Meg of RAM.
And I too don’t have very much in my computer. Including Windows XP and everything, my avast scans 12.5 Gig in right around 2 hours. SAS and MBAM scan my Hard Drive at around 1 hour each. So, if you’re saying Dr. Web CureIt easily takes MUCH longer than avast, well … maybe it WOULD take an entire weekend! Yikes! :o
Is not AV-Comparatives compare between AV products?! Malwarebytes is Antispyware, in that case there must be a compare between Malwarebytes, SUPERAntiSpyware, PC Tools Spyware Doctor, SpyBot S&D, Spyware Terminator, Windows Defender and some other Products such as this…
