A good AV product on your machine is a must. But to be fully protected you need a multi-layered defense, fully updated and patched OS, System Monitoring System, safe surfing habits and no script enabled for non-trusted sites, blocking of spyware sites etc. etc. About the problems of AV vendors, read this article by Kaspersky’s:
