av5 - shields off on startup

On startup, Avast warns me that the web & mail shields are not switched on. If I try to switch them on manually, nothing happens. After about 20 minutes the shields come on and only at that point do I access the internet.

Can anyone give a likely explanation for this?

Difficult to guess. It could be:

1. Bad avast installation > Repair it.
2. Other software (antivirus) conflicting > Uninstall the other software.
3. Infection > Run a full scan.
